WILMINGTON, N.C. – Katie Lanz and Brooke Hanshumaker had 14 kills apiece as UNCW volleyball clipped James Madison in five sets on Saturday at Hanover Hall.
The Seahawks improved to 3-17 overall and 2-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Dukes, meanwhile, fell to 12-5 and 6-3.
UNCW opened the match taking the first two sets by identical scores of 26-24. JMU, however, rallied to take sets three and four by scores of 25-21 and 26-24, respectively, to force a fifth set.
In the deciding set, UNCW trailed 6-5 before reeling off eight unanswered points to take a 13-6 lead it wouldn't surrender to win the set, 15-10.
UNCW hit .269, committing just one hitting error in 26 attacks, in taking the final set.
Lanz and Hanshumaker were joined in double-digit kills by Brianna Haggerty and Sarah Blakely with 12 and 10, respectively. Haggerty rounded out a double-double with a team-high-tying 18 digs. Annabelle Schall fashioned a double-double of her own with 21 assists and 10 digs.
JMU was led by Miette Veldman's 24 kills, also a match high, and Sophia Davis added 22 kills of her own. Davis finished hitting .600 with just one hitting error in 35 attacks.
JMU outhit the Seahawks by a narrow margin, .263-.259, as Caroline Dozier doled out 56 assists.
UNCW controlled play at the net with an 8-4 lead in blocks.
The series concludes on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start at Hanover Hall.
