Oregon’s cold shooting and issues with ball movement persist.
The Ducks shot 39.2% from the field and had just six assists on 25 baskets in a 62-50 loss to Saint Mary’s in the semifinals of the Maui Invitational Tuesday night at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.
“Offensively, defensively, we’re not connected,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “I’m not questioning the talent of the team, I’m just questioning our ability as coaches to connect with them and get them to do the things that we know we have in order to be successful.”
Eric Williams Jr. scored 13 points as the lone player in double-figures for Oregon (3-2), which shot just 7 for 27 from the field and scored just 15 points in the first half.
Dan Fotu had 10 of his 16 points off the bench in the first half the Gaels (6-0), who took a 23-15 edge into the break.
Oregon shot much better in the second half, making 13 of 24 shots, and closed within 48-40 with 8:04 remaining, but couldn’t get any closer.
“We had six assists and we were only able to get eight threes (attempted) and couldn’t penetrate and kick and get the ball moving,” Altman said. “Disappointed on the offensive end. Defensively, I thought we played really hard the first half, but then our communication broke down a lot in the second half.”
Tommy Kuhse finished with 13 points and Alex Ducas added 12 for Saint Mary’s, which owned a 14-0 edge in fast break points. The Gaels advanced to play Wisconsin in the tournament championship game at 2 p.m. Wednesday on ESPN.
Second-year freshman Franck Kepnang made his first career start for the Ducks and recorded nine points and three rebounds in 15 minutes. The center made 4 of 8 shots from the floor and made his only free throw attempt.
Center N’Faly Dante finished with seven points and three rebounds, while making 3 for 4 shots, in 17 minutes off the bench for Oregon, which will play Houston in the third-place game at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on ESPN2.
Altman cited Kepnang and Dante as two bright spots for UO, which opened the season with two lopsided wins over Texas Southern and SMU but has shot poorly and struggled to move the ball in losses to BYU and Saint Mary’s over the last eight days.
“A lot of work ahead because we’ve regressed and fundamentally we’re not sound at all defensively or offensively and that’s my fault,” Altman said. “I mentioned that last time (after BYU). We make mistakes, we made fundamental mistakes. A lot of it I’ve got to get corrected. We’ve got to work together to do that.”
