FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - The goal of reducing the threat of the coronavirus for a new group of young children in Allen County has taken a step forward.
Thursday was day one at the Coliseum clinic for COVID shots being made available for 5 to 11-year olds.
Parents brought in dozens of kids for appointments.
Allen County Health Department officials told us before noon that 80 children in the new age group eligible for COVID shots were on the schedule to be vaccinated before the end of the day.
9-year old Micah Grogg told us why he was anxious to get the shot.
"Because, I wanted to protect a lot of people," Micah said.
"He didn't really want to get a shot as much, but he was excited about the chance to help protect the people that are in his life and in the whole community," said his mother Roxann Grogg.
The pediatric doses offered to the younger children are one-third the size of the doses for people 12 and older.
You can schedule an appointment for a child to get a COVID-19 vaccination at the Memorial Coliseum by going here.
