INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team received an at-large berth to the 2021 NCAA Division I Championship and will face Ball State in the first round on Friday (Dec. 3) at 4 p.m. inside L&N Federal Credit Union Arena on the campus of Louisville.
The Wolverines (19-11) will make their 20th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and will kick off action in Louisville, Ky., against Ball State (29-3), which is coming off a Mid-American Conference championship won on their home court as the No. 1 seed.
Friday's other first-round match features No. 1 overall seed Louisville against first-time tournament team UIC. The Michigan/Ball State winner will face the winner of the Louisville/UIC match in the second round on Saturday (Dec. 4) at 6 p.m.
U-M's showdown with Ball State is the fourth in program history and the first since the 2017 season. The Wolverines are 3-0 all-time against the Cardinals, with all three matches coming at neutral sites. Ball State is riding a 19-match winning streak. The Cardinals took on fellow Big Ten Conference member Iowa earlier this season, winning in five sets at the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament.
Michigan ended the regular season on a three-match winning streak, which included upending No. 23 Illinois at home in the final weekend of the regular season. The NCAA appearance is Michigan's 19th under head coach Mark Rosen.
The Big Ten Conference received eight bids to the NCAA Tournament. No. 9 Ohio State is in the only other Big Ten team in Michigan's region, while No. 12 Minnesota and No. 4 Wisconsin are both on the Wolverines' side of the bracket.
