Game Notes: Ball State | Texas Tech | Stephen F. Austin | Saint Joseph's

Opening Tip:

- The Cardinals are looking to start their 2021-22 season off 3-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season when Ball State made history with an 11-0 non-conference mark. So far, Ball State has defeated Milwaukee (84-75, OT) and Butler (70-56).

- It will be the first-ever meeting between the Cardinals and all three schools (Texas Tech, Stephen F. Austin & Saint Joseph's) this weekend at the Van Chancellor Classic. The Cardinals are set to face Texas Tech first on Friday and then Stephen F. Austin on Saturday with both games slated for a 5 p.m. ET start at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Ball State will then wrap up play at the Van Chancellor Classic on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET against Saint Joseph's before heading back home to Muncie.

- The Van Chancellor Classic marks the seventh holiday tournament under Ball State 10th year head coach Brady Sallee that the Cardinals have participated in across the country. Ball State has also played in places like Las Vegas, Nev., Boulder, Colo., Savannah, Ga., Estero, Fla., Albuquerque, N.M. and the Bahamas.

- The last time the Cardinals won a holiday tournament was in 2019-20 when Ball State took home the Lobo Christmas Classic (Dec. 18-20) after going 3-0 in Albuquerque, N.M. with victories over Loyola Marymount (77-72), Providence (52-51) and New Mexico (70-57).

- Ball State has been well rested and haven't played a game since Nov. 16 at in-state rival Butler. Although a slow start for both teams, the Cardinals ran away with it in the second half with a late 8-0 run in the third quarter which was spear headed by redshirt junior Anna Clephane who finished the contest with 21 points. Clephane also currently leads the Cardinals in scoring averaging 16.5 points per game.

Agustsdottir Nearing 1,000 Points:
Ball State senior crasher Thelma Dis Agustsdottir is nearing the 1,000 career point plateau. Agustsdottir currently has 898 points and needs 102 to become the 30th member of the 1,000 point club and the ninth under head coach Brady Sallee.

Consistent Clephane:
Redshirt junior Anna Clephane has picked up right where she has left off from last season. Clephane in the past has scored some key baskets to put the Cardinals in a winning position and this season has been no different. In Ball State's first contest, Milwaukee had a three-point advantage (71-68) with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter on Nov. 9. Sallee and his squad then outplayed the Panthers calling some strategic timeouts along with some forced fouls which would eventually put the ball in the hands of Clephane as time was winding down. Clephane's driving layup as time expired tied the game at 72-72 to send the contest into the extra period and eventually gave BSU the OT victory over the Panthers. Then at Butler, Clephane sparked and 8-0 run after scoring five-straight points to give Ball State a cushion that eventually led to a victory over Butler on Nov. 16 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

A lot of New Faces:
Ball State welcomes three true freshmen to the team in Ally Becki, Madelyn Bischoff and Marie Kiefer. The Cardinals also welcome four transfers to the roster this season in Makenna Burch, Skyla Knight, Chyna Latimer and Jazmyn Turner

Welcome Back:
Ball State returns All-Mid-American Conference selection Sydney Freeman from last year's squad (12.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg) along with teammates Anna Clephane (12.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg), Thelma Dis Agustsdottir (11.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg), Annie Rauch (6.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg), Blake Smith (3.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg), Ivet Subirats (3.2 ppg, 1.8 rpg), Estel Puiggros (1.4 ppg, 1.1 rpg) and Cameron Grant.

Backs, Crashers, and Keys:
This year, the Cardinals are forgoing "traditional" positions and using their own such as backs, crashers, and keys, to bring a sense of team unity. That system proved to be the lift Ball State needed, especially with so many new faces on the court against Milwaukee on Tuesday. In fact, all 11 Cardinals that played against the Panthers either scored or had a rebound, with three reaching double figures in scoring.
