‘Being the Ricardos’ Shows Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s Stylish Off-Screen Life - Architectural Digest

Set decorator Ellen Brill purchased the chairs and chaise on Chairish. Most of the other rented tables are glass, silver, or antique gold “to emphasize the cool quality of the room,” she says. Drapery and a three-way mirror were custom-made. The étagères are filled with photos of Arnaz, a few books, and sculptures to “express Lucy’s femininity. We also felt that she would always have fresh flowers.”

Emphasizing what was on the line for the personal and professional partners meant heightening their prosperous life offstage. Ball’s elegant neoclassical-style dressing room at Desilu is a long way from the communal space she uses in a flashback to her popular radio show, My Favorite Husband. “This was a nurturing space for her,” says set decorator Ellen Brill of the area she transformed at The Ebell of Los Angeles, a historic women’s club. “I love Art Deco, so I wanted Lucy’s dressing room to have the glamorous feel of 1930s-40s movie stars. We landed on a silvery blue and pastel palette, and I purchased sinuously shaped furniture that we reupholstered in luscious velvets and satins.”

A Simi Valley residence became the Arnaz’s posh pool area. The vintage chaise lounges were reupholstered with canvas cushions; the umbrella is custom-made. A large number of plants and trees were added to the landscape.

The high-end decor in the couple’s spacious home, shot in a Pasadena residence, also befits Hollywood luminaries. The living room furnishings include large-scale, custom, upholstered floral chairs with drapery to match, additional chairs and sofas with custom dyed trims of bullion and gimp fringe, and a Chinese Art Deco rug.

Flashbacks offer other rich environments, and Brill says the set-dressing colors used for them are more vibrant than those depicting later moments. Scenes of the storied Ciro’s nightclub—where Bardem as Arnaz sings “Babalu” and plays conga before making both famous as Ricky Ricardo—were filmed in a salon on the retired RMS Queen Mary ocean liner. Deep-rust velvet custom-made booths flank the dance floor, and the stage is outfitted with an Austrian satin drapery backdrop and bandstands. The tableware and lamps sit on custom tablecloths. Brill says there was one prop they just couldn’t get enough of: “We had ashtrays everywhere, in every set!”
