WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Duke men posted five top-five Blue Devil marks along with a trio of top finishes to wrap up a strong opening weekend of competition at the JDL College Kick-off for the Blue Devil track & field program.
"It was a really good opening meet," said director of track & field Shawn Wilbourn. "It's clear that the talent we've acquired on the men's side is at an all-time high and I'm excited for how that's going to bode for this upcoming indoor season and ACC Championships."
Junior Beau Allen, graduate student Michael Fairbanks and sophomore Alejandro Rodriguez secured the three first place finishes for the Blue Devils, while also posting top-five finishes in the Duke record books. Allen reached a height of 2.12m (6-11.5 feet), matching his No. 4 all-time high jump mark set at the 2020 Tiger Paw Invitational. Fairbanks' 5.15m (16-10.75 feet) mark moved him into a four-way tie for fourth in the pole vault on the Duke list, while Rodriguez's 1:20.85 converted time in the 600m ranks third all-time.
"I thought our vertical jumps today really stood out with Michael [Fairbanks] in the pole vault and Beau [Allen] in the high jump; both of them getting victories and getting on the top-five all-time list." said Wilbourn.
Two more Blue Devils secured their spot in the Duke record books following successful outings in their respective events. Junior Ezra Mellinger moved into second all-time and set a new personal best in the 60m dash at 6.82 seconds to take second place. The Ronks, Pa., native's mark was the best time in the event by a Blue Devil since the 1992 season. Freshman Michael Herzog made his Duke debut and placed third in the triple jump with 14.41m (41-3.5 feet), the third-best mark in program history.
Mellinger also took second in the long jump with a 7.11m (23-4 feet) mark and Almarhoun's jump measured 6.71m (22-0.25 feet) for fifth place. Sophomore Job Trahan clocked 1:24.49 (4th) in his first collegiate 600m race, with the 4x400m relay of Rodriguez, graduate student Miles Mingo, freshman Michael Bennett and sophomore Gage Knight finished second (3:20.23) to wrap up Sunday's top-five placements for Duke.
"I thought our decathletes also performed well – Gage Knight making the finals in the hurdles and Michael Bennett, as a freshman, performed well in the hurdles and the high jump. I'm excited for those guys and what they're going to be capable of doing once we get to some of the bigger meets."
