WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –  Four new Blue Devils carved their spot in the record books while Duke recorded five combined first place finishes to highlight the first day of competition at the JDL College Kick-off.

Five athletes set new personal bests, while the Blue Devils broke two meet records to open the 2021-22 indoor campaign on a strong note.

"Our women had a great performance today at the JDL Indoor meet to end our fall training," said director of track & field Shawn Wilbourn. "It gave us a great indicator of where we are, and it will motivate them to continue to train over the winter break. I told the team after the meet that in terms of where we are in December, and the number of first places and top-five all-time performances that we got today, that we are going to be in contention to win indoor ACC's, which is our number one goal."

Junior Kinsie Huggins, sophomore Moorea Mitchell and senior Isabel Wakefield each had strong days as the trio improved their marks in the record book. Mitchell and Wakefield moved into third on Duke's all-time list in the weight throw and 60m hurdles, respectively, and set new PRs in the process. Mitchell took first in the weight throw at 17.46m (57-3.5 feet) while Wakefield clocked in at 8.42 seconds to place second in the 60m hurdles. Huggins improved her No. 5 shot put mark after recording 13.74m (45-1 feet) to finish fourth among the field.

Lauren Hoffman got her graduate year off to a great start by placing first in the women's 600m race while freshman Megan McGinnis grabbed a second place finish in her Blue Devil debut. The duo's converted times of 1:30.57 and 1:31.85 rank third and fifth all-time, respectively, in the Duke record book.

Carly King kicked off her junior season with an impressive performance in her first collegiate appearance in the triple jump. The Davenport, Iowa native earned a top-five finish at 11.27m (36-11.75 feet), good for fifth in Duke history.

"I thought Issy [Wakefield], just based off the improvement she's shown from a year ago, by starting off with a personal best in the hurdles as well as a personal best in the long jump, it was just outstanding. Lauren Hoffman and Megan McGinnis had outstanding showings in the 600m, and I also thought that Moorea Mitchell winning the weight throw, improving on her personal best and moving higher in the rankings was a great way to finish the meet. Carly King also continues to improve on the triple jump - she's already made her way onto the top-five list in an event she's still learning."

Senior Rylee Bowen and junior Jenna Crean were the other Blue Devils to take home individual first place finishes. Bowen recorded a time of 3:06.13 in the 1000m race, while Crean finished at 57.36 in the 400m dash.

In the lone Duke team event of the day, Crean, Hoffman, Meredith Sims and McGinnis' first place time of 3:49.07 in the 4x400m relay set a new JDL College Kick-off meet record, breaking the eight-year-old record held by Coastal Carolina.

Junior Elasia Campbell established a new meet record in the high jump. The Marietta, Ga., native's height of 1.76m (5'-9.25") bested the previous mark of 1.75m set by Nakita Grey (NC A&T) in 2013. Brianna Smith also saw success in the high jump as the sophomore set a new personal best in the event at 1.71m.

The Blue Devils recorded 12 additional top-five placements across the 60m, 400m and 600m, as well as the long jump, hurdles and 1000m. Two of those top-five marks were personal bests – Wakefield's 5.93m (19-5.5 feet) long jump garnered second place and King clocked in at 7.66 seconds to finish fifth in the 60m.

Freshman Paige Sommers opened her Duke career with a great starting pole vault on the small poles and finished second with a height of 3.95m (12-11.5 feet), while classmate Chyler Turner turned in an outstanding performance in the 60m hurdles to earn third with an 8.45 finish. Turner's run checked in at fifth on Duke's all-time list. Graduate student Erin Marsh recorded a time of 8.58 to place fourth in the 60m hurdles.
