UM Rallies but Falls Short vs. Ball State in NCAA Tourney to End Season - University of Michigan Athletics - MGoBlue

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (Dec. 3), as Ball State topped the Wolverines in a thrilling five-set match (25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 25-27, 15-8) at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena on the campus of the University of Louisville.

Senior Paige Jones led the Michigan offense with 16 kills on the night and fell one dig short of a double-double, finishing with nine. Sophomore Jess Mruzik had 13 kills and added nine digs to the defensive effort. Libero Hannah Grant had a match-high 20 digs and a career-high five service aces, while setter Scottee Johnson had a double-double of 35 assists and 15 digs.

Michigan's junior duo of Jess Robinson and May Pertofsky turned in a quality overall night, as Robinson had nine kills and hit .353 for the match, while Pertofsky added five kills and tied a career-best with seven total blocks (one solo block, six block assists). Freshman middle Jacque Boney had seven kills and five total blocks (1 BS, 4 BA) and junior Amber Beals chipped in eight digs off the bench.

The decisive fifth set was a microcosm of the entire match, as Ball State jumped ahead early and never relinquished the lead. Michigan hit -.048 in the set while the Cardinals' offense clicked to the tune of a .353 attack. In the end the Wolverines were never able to recover, falling to the Mid-American Conference champions, 15-8.

Trouble started out of the gate as Michigan fell flat early, trailing Ball State from the first point and never recovering. The Wolverines hit just .032 in the opener while the Cardinals came out swinging to a .323 clip, ultimately winning the set 25-17.

The Wolverines flipped the script in the second set, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead and withstanding multiple charges from the Cardinals late to win 25-22. Mruzik led the offense with five kills and Jones chipped in four more to help even the match at 1.

Set three saw a tight one early turn to another lopsided win for Ball State. The teams saw two tie scores and a lead change when the match reached 13-13, but the Cardinals took over from there. Ball State finished the set on a 12-5 run while hitting an impressive .400 and holding Michigan to just .267 hitting to get the win 25-18.

The fourth set provided incredible excitement as the Wolverines needed extra points to even the match. After trailing 20-17, Michigan chipped away at the deficit and ultimately tied the score at 23. The squads traded match-point opportunities, but it was the Maize and Blue that put together a 3-0 run to force a fifth set with a 27-25 victory.

The Wolverines finish the season with an 18-12 overall record, and appearing on the program's 20th NCAA Tournament.
