MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State women's basketball team battled to the very end but couldn't catch the Panthers, falling to ACC foe Pitt by a score of 64-54 Saturday afternoon in Worthen Arena.
Statistically, the Cardinals handled the ball very well with a season low nine turnovers while Ball State's defense forced Pitt to commit 17 miscues. Ball State did struggle though offensively, only shooting 30.5 percent from the field and 16.7 percent from behind the arc. Pitt, a very good rebounding team coming into today's contest, out-rebounded Ball State, 51-30.
"It was a hard-fought game with two good teams battling it," Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "I thought the difference in the game was maybe that they imposed their will on the boards and got to the free throw line. We had a lot of good looks. I like that part of it. I don't think that we are going to miss those shots a whole lot moving forward but you give them credit for their part in that. I liked our execution, clearly we took care of the ball with a plus 12 in the turnover margin and we gave ourselves a chance to be in this game."
Redshirt junior Anna Clephane led the Cardinals again in scoring with 17 points while junior Sydney Freeman ended the day with 10 points and five assists. Defensively, freshman Marie Kiefer registered a personal high 10 rebounds.
Things weren't looking great at the start of today's contest for the Cardinals. Pitt opened the first frame with a 7-0 scoring spree with just a little over a minute shaved off the clock.
You would think with that, the hot start for the Panthers would impair Ball State from fighting back, but that simply was not the case.
Although, Ball State did trail the Panthers the entire first half, they continued to play some gritty basketball and never gave up. Pitt had gone up by nine points (30-21) with 4:33 left in the second quarter. A free throw from junior Jazmyn Turner followed by a driving layup with 3:42 left on the clock from Clephane sparked a 13-6 run for Ball State that allowed the Cardinals to end the half down by only two (36-34) to the Panthers.
The Cardinals carried their momentum into the third quarter after the break, knotting the game twice after Clephane scored seven-straight points for BSU. The last tie was 38-38 at the 6:21 mark. After that, Pitt outscored the Cardinals 18-8, building a 10-point cushion (56-46) as both teams headed into the final 10 minutes of action.
Unfortunately, the closest the Cardinals could get to the Panthers in the fourth period was seven points (59-52) with 6:40 left. Pitt answered with a 3-point basket from Taisha Exanor that would shatter Ball State's hopes to complete its comeback.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns to the road Wednesday, Dec. 8 when it plays at IUPUI. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff in the Jungle.
