While they've met only once, Ball State (6-3) was involved in a landmark moment in Bellarmine program history as the Cardinals represented the Knights' first-ever opponent as a Division-I program. The two teams squared off in Bellarmine's season opener last year in Freedom Hall, a D1 debut that was delayed nearly three weeks due to the coronavirus.
Ball State raced out to a 29-5 lead after one quarter en route to a 98-42 win. It didn't help that the Knights were missing multiple key players as a result of the pandemic, but Bellarmine Coach Chancellor Dugan also praised the Cardinals' overwhelming physicality after that contest, which was a revealing introduction to the D1 game for the Knights.
Ball State will pose a formidable challenge once again. The Cardinals, who have been off since Dec. 11, will enter on a two-game winning streak after defeating IUPUI 73-67 and Utah State 81-55. Ball State suffered one lopsided loss to Stephen F. Austin, 87-66, but its other two setbacks — 71-67 to Texas Tech and 64-54 to Pittsburgh — were highly competitive, with the Cardinals owning a four-point lead with four minutes left in the former before Tech rallied.
Anna Clephane's 16.2 points per game tops the chart for Ball State. Thelma Dis Agustsdottir is next at 10.7 and is the team's top 3-point threat, and Sydney Freeman is a third double-figurer scorer at 10.4 per contest. Freeman and Ally Becki both distribute over 4 assists per game. Bellarmine will have to be protective of the ball against the Cardinals, whose opponents average 19.1 turnovers per game, with four foes amassing at least 22 giveaways.
Bellarmine (2-7) probably couldn't have played much better than it did during a 105-48 win Thursday over Spalding in Freedom Hall. The Knights scored the most points during the Dugan era, tied the program record with 15 3-pointers and threatened the program record for field-goal percentage after shooting a shining 66.7 percent. In addition, Dugan earned the 150th win of her career at Bellarmine.
Sophomore guard Mackenzie Keelin poured in a career-high 25 points against Spalding, and junior guard Jaela Johnson reached double figures for the sixth time in seven games after registering 20 points. The duo combined to go 10-of-14 from 3-point land.
Senior guard Presley Brown pocketed the first double-double of her career behind 11 points and a career-best 10 assists. Senior forward Sheniqua Coatney hit 8-of-10 shots in scoring 16 points, and freshman forward Haley Stoklosa matched her career high with 11 points.
