YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell to Ball State, 83-73, inside the George Gervin GameAbove Center Wednesday night, Jan. 12.
Redshirt senior Areanna Combs (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Oklahoma State)) recorded a team-best 23 points and five assists while redshirt sophomore Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West (Florida International)) added 16 points, shooting 7-of-20 (70%) from the floor. Additionally, redshirt senior Danielle Rainey (Washington D.C.-Vista Ridge (Florida)) finished with 12 points, knocking down a trio of three-pointers. On the defensive end, Combs and Skanes both grabbed five rebounds and swiped two balls. In total, the Eagles' defense forced 18 turnovers on the night.
How It Happened
Eastern Michigan struggled out of the gate, falling behind 25-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 50-34 halftime deficit.
EMU's deficit continued to grow after halftime as the Eagles faced a 64-46 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. The Green and White played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 12 points in the paint in the period.
Ball State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 68-48 advantage before Eastern went on an 8-0 run, finished off by a Combs' layup, cutting the Cardinals' lead to 68-56 with 6:41 to go in the contest. The Eagles continued to fight, but BSU managed to hold on for the 83-73 win. Eastern Michigan fired away from deep in the final stanza, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 27 points.
Game Notes
» The Eagles shot well from three-point range, knocking down 8-of-20 (40%) long-range attempts. The game was the fourth this season that EMU has hit the 40-percent mark. Last season, Eastern only accomplished the feat one time.
» The Eastern Michigan defense forced 18 turnovers. The 18 takeaways marked the seventh time in the 2021-22 season that the Eagles have forced 15-or-more turnovers.
» The Green and White produced 32 points in the paint, the fifth time this season the team has notched at least 30.
» EMU got five rebounds apiece from Combs, Skanes, and redshirt junior Juanita Agosto (Seattle, Wash.-Garfield).
» Combs' 23 points marked the second time this season and the 21st time in her career that the redshirt senior has notched the 20-point plateau.
» Skanes had 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. It marks the fourth time this season the center has shot 70 percent from the field (minimum of four shots taken).
» Four Eastern Michigan players produced double-digit point totals marking the fifth such time this season that has happened.
» EMU shot 50.8% from the field, 27-for-53, only the second time this season the team has shot better than 50 percent and the first time versus a Division I opponent.
» Eastern had three players with multiple steals on the night as Combs, Skanes, and Rainey each tallied two. Tonight marks the fourth time this season three Eagles have recorded multiple steals in a contest (Binghamton, Dec. 10; Oklahoma, Dec. 7; Detroit Mercy, Nov. 13).
Historical Notes
» Tonight marked the 86th all-time meeting between the Eagles and the Cardinals. Eastern still leads the all-time series, 45-41.
» With 23 points tonight, Combs is now just eight points away from eclipsing the 1,000-point mark.
