Ball State to celebrate 50th anniversary of Title IX - BallStateSports.com

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State Athletics is set to commemorate its rich history of success and tradition in women's athletics with its celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX in a year-long campaign.

Title IX, which was signed into federal law by President Richard Nixon on June 23, 1972, prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding and gave women many more opportunities to compete at the collegiate level.

"Fifty years ago, President Nixon signed Title IX into law and created opportunities for so many, like me," Ball State director of athletics Beth Goetz said. "Ball State has such a rich and storied tradition of success in women's athletics and has seen many extraordinary student-athletes put on the Cardinal and White. Help us celebrate these pioneers and our amazing current and future Cardinals."

Ball State's first women's athletics teams were field hockey and women's basketball in 1960, shortly followed thereafter by softball and volleyball in 1963, tennis in 1964 and gymnastics and swimming in 1965.

With the addition of cross country, golf, soccer and track and field, Ball State currently supports 11 women's athletics programs. Entering the 2022 calendar year, the Cardinals have captured 95 conference championships through their 11 women's programs.

Throughout the year, Ball State's Title IX campaign will center around the three core pillars of recognition, education and engagement.

Ball State Athletics encourages fans, alumni, and community members to share memories, stories and experiences throughout the year on social media, as the department highlights pioneers, letterwinners, coaches and staff that were trailblazers and continue to empower women today and every day.

As we celebrate the success of women in sports, there will be opportunities to support their academic, competitive, career, and personal development. The Women's Athletics Fund, established in 2021, will continue to enhance the mission of Title IX.
