After two years of uncertainty due to the pandemic, the Cancer Society of Greenville’s Hope Ball returns April 29 with a renewed commitment to celebrating successes and raising awareness and funding to support the society’s work.
Hope Ball chairwoman Kelly Warren says the black-tie event is a major effort that happens every two years and serves as the cancer society’s principal fundraising event.
“It’s a huge undertaking,” Warren says. “I feel like I’m putting on my wedding again.”
The fundraising goal for the Hope Ball this year is $650,000. The pandemic caused the cancellation of the 2020 ball, but the 2018 ball raised $615,00. All of the money stays local and directly funds the work of the Cancer Society of Greenville — which is not affiliated with the American Cancer Society — in supporting cancer patients across the Upstate.
The Hope Ball is distinctive in that it is the culmination of a series of pre-ball events that celebrate the courage of patients and their families, recognize the dedication of physicians, acknowledge the support of community partners and raise overall awareness of the society’s work, says Warren.
She has been working with a committee of 34 women from across a variety of professional fields and backgrounds to organize the ball. Almost everyone is touched in some way by cancer, says Warren and her fellow organizers are committed to supporting the work of the society.
The fundraising goal for the Hope Ball this year is $650,000.
“Everyone wants to give back,” Warren says. “No one is immune to [cancer]. We’re all going to be touched by it in some way.”
Maria Redwine, a counselor with the Cancer Society of Greenville, says the Hope Ball is aptly named because hope is something central to the society’s mission. Bringing hope and needed services to the Upstate’s cancer patients is what unifies everyone involved with both the ball and the cancer society.
“[Cancer is] one of those words that once you hear it, your life is changed forever,” Redwine says. “Every patient we serve is different in their journey, but I would say the common denominator is they want hope.”
Organizers anticipate that about 700 people will attend.
This year’s premiere partners are Prisma Health, Bon Secours St. Francis, Gastroenterology Associates, and Gibbs Cancer Center of Spartanburg Regional.
