SEB reveals change to Birthday Ball date due to COVID-19 concerns – The Elm - Washington College Elm

After a year and a half of online activities,  giveaways, and outdoor masked events, the Student Events Board announced that they will be bringing the spirit of George Washington back to the Washington College campus for the first Birthday Ball since the college went virtual.

This year’s theme of enchanted forest was revealed on Dec. 13 during the annual Late Night Breakfast.

“It just looks really pretty and it fits the spring vibes,” Director of Annual Events senior Iyonna Young said. “I feel like the entire [SEB] board saw something in it and each person saw how they could creatively execute it.”

Young said that they are still in the very early stages of planning however, she said to expect plenty of fairy lights as well as a “mystical” nature inspired environment.

Young was involved in last year’s effort to bring a Birthday Ball experience to students during the virtual semester. On Feb. 18, 2021, “The Elm” reported that SEB sent out an email to the campus community with a Google Form attached, announcing they would send a free sweatshirt to any student — on or off-campus — who filled out the form.

This year, the dance will be held outside on April 23, according to Director of Student Engagement Antoine Jordan ’12.

Birthday Ball is usually held the weekend of George Washington’s birthday, which is on Feb. 22.

However, following the recent development of safety concerns about the new COVID-19 Omicron variant, Jordan said that pushing the date of the event to April will allow SEB to host the event outside.

According to Jordan, students should expect to see tents outside Martha Washington Square — and potentially on the Clifton Miller Library Terrace — to allow students the choice to enjoy the event mask-free.

As of right now, the college will be allowing one outside guest per student into Birthday Ball.

“I think that the students did a really great job this past semester to keep the community safe as possible on campus, and I appreciate their willingness to not allow guests at Shoremal to make that sacrifice, and because of that diligence, we think that it is okay to move forward and allow students to bring a guest to Birthday Ball,” Jordan said.

All outside guests are required to purchase a ticket (the price of which has yet to be determined) and provide proof of vaccination, according to Jordan.

However, this policy is contingent on the number of cases that exist on campus throughout the semester at the discretion of the College’s Contingency Planning Group.

COVID-19 is not the only reason the administration decided to move the event’s date. Jordan said that there has been a lot of conversations between stakeholders and senior staff members across campus about the best time to host the event.

Jordan recognizes that not all students have the opportunity to attend Birthday Ball due to sporting tournaments, art performances, and academic dates and said that the new date was chosen to optimize student attendance.

“I appreciate everyone, especially the student body, being super flexible and patient during this unprecedented time of uncertainty,” Jordan said. “It feels exciting to be shifting back to some of our traditional events again.”
