KENT, Ohio - It was another defensive battle between Ball State and Kent State in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon as the Golden Flashes prevailed in the final seconds by a score of 64-61 at the M.A.C. Center.
The Cardinals (14-8, 7-5 MAC) were forced to foul the Golden Flashes (15-7, 7-6 MAC) in the final moments. The tactic worked by allowing BSU to regain the final possession. The Cardinals then had the opportunity to send the game into overtime but freshman Ally Becki's 3-pointer narrowly missed the mark.
Statistically, both teams were similar in almost every category. Ball State won the points in the paint battle, 30-22. BSU also limited its turnovers to a season low 11.
Playing its second matchup of the season, it was an up-and-down affair to start the game between the Cardinals and the Golden Flashes.
A bucket by graduate senior Chyna Latimer gave BSU its last lead of the first period, 9-7. Kent State then put together a 13-2 scoring to give the Golden Flashes a 20-11 edge over the Cardinals as both teams headed into the second quarter of play.
Kent State then continued to dominate in second period of action building an impressive 13-point cushion (26-13) by the 7:59 mark. Latimer again came up big with a bucket that eventually sparked a 14-0 run that brought BSU within one (28-27). The Cardinals' scoring spree was capped off by free throws from freshman Marie Kiefer.
The Golden Flashes would end the half with a layup to take a slight 30-27 advantage over Ball State at intermission.
The third and fourth quarters were like the first 20 minutes of action. Ball State finally got back on top after three offensive rebounds, which led to Becki's high-arched 3-pointer to make it a 54-53 ballgame with just over four minutes remaining.
As the two teams battled down the stretch, Kent State remained in control and took the result by three.
For the game, junior Sydney Freeman led the Cardinals with 17 points, while Becki earned her second double-double of her career after a 12-point, 12-rebound performance. Rounding out the double-digit scoring for Ball State was Kiefer with 11.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home Wednesday for round two against Buffalo at 6:30 p.m. ET in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals won their first meeting over the Bulls 72-70 on Jan. 26 in Buffalo, N.Y.
