MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State baseball team will be back on the diamond for a four-game series at Western Michigan, the first Mid-American Conference road games of the season. The series is scheduled to begin with a single game on Saturday, followed by a doubleheader on Sunday and a single game Monday.
In the last MAC series, the Cardinals swept the Falcons of Bowling Green. After an outstanding weekend at the plate, Matthew Rivera was named MAC Co-Player of the Week. The Cardinals enter the weekend on a five-game winning streak and are 7-1 in conference play and 12-8 overall. The Broncos enter with a 4-13 mark and are 2-2 in the MAC.
Slugging Rivera
Rivera led the Cardinals with a .615 batting average and posted a 1.308 slugging percentage in the series against Bowling Green. He tied for the team lead with two home runs. He drove in 11 RBIs and led the squad with 17 total bases for the weekend. He was walked a team-high six times. He hit two home runs in the third game of the series, which included a grand slam. He also drew a walk-off walk in the third game of the series as the run-rule was put in effect. He was named Co-Player of the Week by the MAC for his contributions over the weekend. For the season, Rivera leads the squad with an .813 slugging percentage and leads the team with a .438 batting average.
The Wright Stuff
Amir Wright has reached base safely in all 20 games this season and is second on the team with a .315 batting average. He has 13 walks, has scored 20 runs, and hit three triples, all lead the team. He has added five doubles, three stolen bases, and one home run. Wright is currently 21st in the nation as the toughest to strikeout and leads the MAC with a strikeout average of 17.8. He has struck out just four times in 71 at bats.
Power Bats
The Cardinal offense features 12 guys that have combined for 24 home runs. BSU is tied for 50th in the NCAA in home runs and leads the MAC. The team has produced 117 RBIs and has produced 125 runs. The Ball State bats are coming off a weekend where the Cardinals scored 55 runs and belted seven home runs.
Trenton Trots
Trenton Quartermaine leads the team with seven home runs and is tied for the MAC lead. He is hitting 0.35 home runs a game which is third in the conference. He leads the team with 24 RBIs and is tied for the team lead with six doubles. He is tied for 54th in the NCAA and leads the MAC in runs batted in.
Strikeout Staff
The Ball State pitching staff is 14th in the NCAA and leads the MAC in strikeouts per nine innings with 11.2.
Pitching Staff
Tyler Schweitzer is expected to get the ball in game one of the series and he leads the team in innings pitched (26.2) and strikeouts (34). He boasts a 3-2 record with an ERA of 3.37. Ty Johnson is the scheduled starter in game two and he enters with a 3-1 record. Johnson has tallied 28 strikeouts in 25 innings of work and an ERA of 6.12. Trennor O'Donnell is projected to get the start in game three of the WMU series and enters the weekend with a 2-2 record. He has produced 23 strikeouts and a 6.56 ERA in 23 1/3 innings. Ty Weatherly and Nate Dohm have 20 or more strikeouts with 22 and 20, respectively. As a unit, the pitching staff is tied for 42nd in the NCAA with 7.78 hits allowed per nine innings, which leads the MAC.
Kloser Klein
Sam Klein solidified his role as a closer as he has five saves, which is tied for 12th in the NCAA and leads the MAC. He has struck out 18 batters in 10 2/3 innings on the mound. Opponents are hitting just .162 against him.

Cardinals vs. Broncos: The Series
The Broncos hold a 100-84 series lead over the Cardinals. Ball State is 34-43 in games at Western Michigan. BSU won three of the four games last season and have won eight of the last nine games against WMU.
Scouting Western Michigan
Dan Armbrustmacher is expected to get the start in game one for WMU and he leads the staff with a 4.15 ERA. He has a 1-1 record and has 33 strikeouts in 26 innings of work. Jack Huisman is slated to get the nod in game two and comes into the weekend with a 15.60 ERA. He has thrown 15 innings with 10 strikeouts and has a 0-3 record. In game three, Joe Shapiro is anticipated to start. Shapiro has a 0-3 mark in 18 innings of work. He has an ERA of 13.50 and has 12 strikeouts. Connor Charping leads the Bronco offense with a .397 batting average. He also leads the team with 23 runs scored and has only struck out six times. Will Morrison enters with a batting average of .317, while Jimmy Allen has produced a batting average of .315 and has a team-high two triples. Ryan Missal paces the team with four home runs. Josh Swinehart has a team-best 14 RBIs.
