MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University baseball team will begin Mid-American Conference play with a four-game series against Ball State University starting Friday, March 11, at 3 p.m. The two teams will face in a Saturday doubleheader, March 12, starting at 11 a.m. while the series concludes on Sunday, March 13, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. All contests can be followed via live stats on EMUEagles.com.
Eastern (2-7) finished its most recent series, dropping a Saturday doubleheader to Morehead State University, March 5. Ball State (5-7) won three of a four-game series against Florida A&M, despite losing its most recent contest to the Rattlers, 3-5, March 6.
The MAC four-game series format includes a single game on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday featuring one seven-inning game followed by one nine-inning game. The four-game sets will conclude with a single contest on Sundays. Games and dates are subject to change.
DROPPIN' TANKS: The Eagles belted six home runs in the first game of the doubleheader against Morehead State, March 5. The six round-trippers is the most EMU has tallied in a contest in over a decade. The last time Eastern Michigan earned six home runs in a game came in a 13-4 victory over Ohio University, May 22, 2009.
Additionally, senior Gabe Denton tabbed two homers in the first game of the doubleheader, March 5. He is the second EMU player this season to total two home runs in a game (Kirk – 2, at Tennessee Tech, Feb. 26). Furthermore, it is just the second time Denton has hit multiple home runs while donning the Green and White (2 - vs. St. Bonaventure, May 1, 2021).
MATT'S BAT: Junior Matt Kirk has begun his EMU career on fire at the plate. The outfielder currently leads the team in batting average (.421), hits (16), slugging percentage (.737), total bases (28), and extra base hits (6). Additionally, Kirk is tied for the team lead in home runs (3). Kirk's .421 batting average (16-for-38) and 16 hits ranks sixth in the Mid-American Conference, while his 9 RBIs is tied for eighth in the league. The Milford, Ohio native's three homers is also tied for fourth in the MAC. Furthermore, the junior has averaged 1.78 hits per game through the first three weeks of the season. That number is good for 32nd in the nation. Tennessee Tech's Ed Johnson leads the nation with 2.4 hits per game average this season.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE: Captain Shane Easter is currently second on the squad in batting average (.412), hits (14), total bases (20), slugging percentage (.588), and on-base percentage (.487). Additionally, Easter ranks eighth in the Mid-American Conference in batting average and 10th in hits.
HITTING FOR POWER: With 15 homers in nine games this season, Eastern Michigan's 1.67 home runs per game mark is tied for 18th in the nation. Eastern Michigan tallied eight home runs in the series against Morehead State, March 4-5. Furthermore, the Eagle belted six home runs in the first contest of the doubleheader, March 5. BAULT TO BAT: Senior Christian Bault is tied for the team lead in home runs (3). Bault went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a homer in the final game of the doubleheader on Saturday, March 5. The senior totaled three hits in both games, and currently rides a five-game hitting streak for Eastern.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE MAC: Eastern Michigan is 615-597-3 overall against the Mid-American Conference. Head Coach Eric Roof holds a record of 35-59 against opposing MAC programs.
ALL-TIME AGAINST BALL STATE: EMU and BSU will meet for the 163rd time this weekend, March 11-13. The Eagles lead the all-time series by a record of 82-79-1. Additionally, Ball State is the only program in the Mid-American Conference Eastern Michigan has tie (8-8, April 30, 1983).
LAST GAMES VERSUS BALL STATE: The two programs met for a four-game series last season, April 16-18. The two MAC foes split the series with the Cardinals winning the most recent contest by a score of 5-2, April 18, 2021.
LAST TIME IN MUNCIE: EMU dropped two of a three-game series against BSU, April 12-13, 2019, the last time the Eagles traveled to Muncie, Ind. Despite dropping the series, Eastern defeated Ball State in the final contest of the series, 7-5.
EASTERN ROOTS IN MUNCIE: Two Eastern Athletics staff members have direct roots to Muncie. Eastern Michigan head volleyball coach Darcy Dorton is originally from the Delaware County city, while Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee completed his undergraduate degree at Ball State (1997), and also served as a graduate assistant in its ticket office from 1997-99.
On the flip side, BSU Associate Director of Athletic Communications Brad Caudill holds his undergraduate degree from EMU and worked for the legendary Jim Streeter in the SID Office.
