The Power Game: Iowa, S. Beauregard thrive on long ball - American Press | American Press - American Press

Two of the most powerful offenses in the area will square off today in Longville.

In a District 4-3A softball showdown, South Beauregard (13-7) will host Iowa (15-5) at 5 p.m.

“I think it is going to be an exciting game,” Iowa head coach Kenzie Singletary said. “I think both teams will be strong on the offensive side.”

Both teams average more than nine runs a game and have multiple power hitters.

South Beauregard is led by first baseman Morgan Eaves, who hit her 50th career home run on Monday. She has 14 this season, and shortstop Emelie Price, a Louisiana-Monroe signee, has nine.

Iowa has three players with four or more home runs in Kamryn Howard (8), Kamryn Broussard (6) and Calee Guillory (4). But Iowa is not solely focused on the long ball.

“We have been hitting the ball pretty well lately,” Singletary said. “We have several kids that have hit some home runs lately.

consistent in getting base hits. We are not shooting for the home run, but they are very consistent with their swings and getting a hold of some every now and then.

“Our pitchers have been working hard and doing a good job of keeping hitters off balance. Our defense has been pretty strong as well.”

There were three home runs in last year’s meeting, an 8-4 South Beauregard win.

Both teams are on extended win streaks with Iowa, last year’s Class 3A runner-up, with eight in a row, and the Lady K’s, a 2021 quarterfinalist, enters with a 10-game win streak.

Iowa shut out South Beauregard 6-0 earlier in the season, and Singletary said she expects to see both of the Lady K’s pitchers — Hayven Myers and Alyssa Cloessner — again.

“We played them early on in the season in a nondistrict game and saw both of their pitchers,” Singletary said. “We kind of know what they are bringing.

“They will probably try to throw both to keep us off balance. We have to have a good approach in the box and make sure we are staying disciplined and not try to hit home runs. We need to get base hits and hit the ball where it is pitched.”

In Lake Charles, Barbe will host Sam Houston in the second game of a District 3-5A two-game series at 6 p.m. today.

Barbe (20-0) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Class 5A power ratings and Sam Houston (14-3) is ninth.
