Despite adverse weather conditions, Ball State posts solid performance at Tennessee Relays - BallStateSports.com

MUNCIE, Ind. – Rain, hail, sleet, snow and a little bit of sunshine mixed in with windy conditions greeted the Ball State track and field team this weekend at the Tennessee Relays, but that didn't stop the Cardinals from bringing home multiple lifetime and season bests.

"It was a good meet," head coach Adrian Wheatley said. "Weather was a bit of a challenge for us, but the group really competed. The multis started us off on day one with a couple PRs and three top-10 finishes. We then just kept going down the line with people have some personal records. There were a lot of good things that came from this performance.

"It was a good competition. It was good to see the team compete, and when the situation wasn't ideal, they didn't make excuses. Their mindset was, 'we're here, we have a lane, let's take advantage of it.' Overall, I'm pleased, and it was a good time for us to continue to get better."

Leading off the meet were the heptathletes in Charity Griffith, Jenelle Rogers and Karlie Zumbro. Griffith placed third overall with 5,455 points with an event win in the high jump (1.80m, 5-10.75) and second in the long jump (5.84m, 19-2.00). Zumbro finished fifth at 5,205 points and a win in the 800-meter run (2:15), while Rogers ended in ninth with 4,720 points in her first-ever heptathlon.

In a field of 19 competitors, the Ball State trio racked up eight top-five finishes from the seven events.

Makensie Kramer led a group of three Cardinals in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 14.37.

Michelle Lehmann crossed the line in a season-best time of 12.09 in the 100-meter dash, also leading a trio of Ball State competitors, which included Aaleiah Winford, who ran for the first time this outdoor season and finished with a time of 12.40.

In the 200-meter dash, Jenna Oriani was just 0.2 from a personal best with a time of 24.84, which was the fastest time in her heat.

Emma Potter won her heat in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.22, while Payton Barlow (fifth) and Alexis Thigpen (ninth) beat all other competitors from the Mid-American Conference in the race.

In the 1,500-meter run, Karleigh Conner improved on her last run by 4.5 seconds and finished in the top five of her heat with a time of 4:44.24.

Carly Spletzer led a slew of Cardinals in 5,000-meter run with a lifetime-best time of 17:44.97.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Juliana Stogsdill opened with a time of 11:36.87, which is within a second of what her equivalent season opener was last year.

In the 4x400-meter relay, the team of Thigpen, Barlow, Kayla Jones and Potter placed fourth with a time of 3:44.19, which is the fastest time in the event by Ball State this season.

In addition to the competition, Wheatley - who was a letterwinner and All-American at Tennessee - was recognized for being a key member of the 2001 national championship team.

The Cardinals return home to host their annual outdoor meet Saturday, April 16 at the Briner Sports Complex.
