Huskies Drop Series Opener to Ball State - Northern Illinois University Athletics

DEKALB, Ill. – Early runs helped lead Ball State to a 13-3 victory over the Northern Illinois University softball team on Tuesday afternoon (April 5) in the series opener at Mary M. Bell Field. Kara Apato (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) and Sam Mallinder (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) each had a pair of hits for the Huskies.

"We stayed pretty disciplined at the plate with the plan that we went in with," said NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe. "We had much better at bats today than we did two days ago at Akron, so that was definitely a positive from today. But bottom line we have to put a zero on the board (defensively) for some innings if we are going to figure out how to turn this series around."

The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the first as four walks and a pair of hits contributed to the inning for Ball State. McKayla Timmons, Amaia Daniel, Kaitlyn Mathews and Delanie Johnson each drove in a run for the Cardinals in the first.

In the second, Ball State scored three more as the first two batters were each hit by a pitch and Daniel tripled to score a pair. Two batters later, Daniels scored on a sacrifice fly by Mathews.

NIU got on the board in the bottom of the second as Mallinder hit a one-out single up the middle and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Izzy Smith (Elmhurst, Ill./York).

Faith Hensley led off the third with a home run for Ball State and, later in the inning, Mathews collected her third RBI with her second sacrifice fly. The Cardinals would add two more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, Katie Keller (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) drew a two-out, based loaded walk to drive in a run and Courtney James (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) doubled to centerfield in the fifth to score a run for the Huskies.

"There are two things you can easily do, you can overswing or give up, and I don't think we did either," Sutcliffe said about maintaining plate discipline when facing an early deficit. "I think we stuck together, we knew it is a three-game series and we wanted to continue to learn throughout the five innings today."

Angelina Russo picked up the victory in the circle for the Cardinals. Russo allowed just one earned run in five innings.

NIU and Ball State will resume their series on Wednesday, April 6, with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
