NEW ERA: First-year head coach Donan Cruz has started his inaugural season off strong leading the Cardinals to one of their best showings in program history with an overall record of 19-2 and a No. 7 national ranking … The season began with two wins over then ranked No. 1 Hawai'i while also defeating nationally ranked BYU… Prior to taking over the helm of the Cardinals, Cruz was a four-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Coach of the Year at Grand View University … Just the fourth head coach in the storied history of Ball State men's volleyball, Cruz led the inaugural Grand View men's team to a 13-13 mark in 2012 season, on his way to compiling a 211-55 overall record with the Vikings … He concluded his Grand View career with the best winning percentage in NAIA men's volleyball history at .793.
ALSO NEW ON THE STAFF: Joining Cruz on the Ball State staff are Midwestern Volleyball Association (MIVA) standout and former Lewis University star Mike Iandolo and BYU men's volleyball alumnus Christian Rupert … Iandolo was a two-time All-MIVA First Team selection and spent the last three season as the head coach at the University of Charleston … Rupert helped lead the Cougars to a pair of appearances NCAA Division I/II Men's Volleyball Championship Match, and following a brief professional career, spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Princeton.
SCOUTING LOYOLA-CHICAGO: The Ramblers are the only Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association team to have upset the Cardinals so far in league play this season. Loyola-Chicago pulled off a 3-1 upset over Ball State in Worthen Arena on Feb. 19. After that, the Cardinals have not dropped a match since while the Ramblers fell to McKendree twice. Tonight's rematch is a big one for the Cardinals as they are looking to clinch the MIVA regular season championship outright for the first time since 1997. Ball State will need to lookout for Loyola-Chicago's top hitter Parker Van Buren who has tallied 298 kills so far this season while averaging 4.52 kills per set. The Ramblers have won three-straight all by 3-0 decisions.
SCOUTING PURDUE FORT WAYNE: Purdue Fort Wayne enters Friday's contest with an overall record of 15-10 and a 6-6 ledger in MIVA action. The Mastodons are coming off back-to-back victories against Quincy (3-0) and Lindenwood (3-1) in last weekend's league play. Jon Diedrich continues to lead PFW offensively with 343 kills this season. The Cardinals have won their last three meetings against the Mastodons including a 3-2 victory in their first meetting in Worthen Arena on Feb. 17. A little history for Saturday's match, the sophomore opposite hitter Dyer Ball has family ties to Purdue Fort Wayne's men's volleyball program as Ball's grandfather, Arnie Ball, not only played for the Cardinals from 1966-67 but he was also the head coach at Purdue Fort Wayne and was inducted into the MIVA Hall of Fame in 2018. His father, Lloy Ball, played at Purdue Fort Wayne where he has been described as the most decorated athlete in school history after being a four-time NCAA All-American and four-time U.S. Olympian.
IN THE NATION: The Cardinals remained at the No. 7 spot in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll. The highest Ball State has ever been ranked was No. 5 and that was in the final poll in 1995. Graduate senior setter Quinn Isaacsonstill ranks first in the nation among his setting peers with 11.56 assists per set while Ball State as a team also holds the top spot for that same category (12.94). Senior middle blocker Felix Egharevba is first in the nation in blocks per set (1.397) and Kaleb Jenness is fourth in attacks per set (8.97) and second in kills per set (4.65).
MANDILARIS EARNS MIVA AND AVCA NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS: Ball State graduate senior opposite hitter Angelos Mandilaris (Chalkida, Greece) has been tabbed the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) defensive player of the week and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national player of the week. Mandilaris not only had a strong showing offensively but also defensively last week. He threw down 32 kills off 69 swings for a .333 hitting percentage to help the Cardinals move past McKendree and Lewis both in 3-0 sweeps. Mandilaris opened the week on Thursday with a 13-kill performance against McKendree while serving up two aces and had nine digs. On Saturday, Mandilaris led all players with a game high 19 kills off 37 attacks for a .378 offensive accuracy. He also had seven digs and earned 21 points for the Cardinals. For the week, Mandilaris averaged 5.33 kills per set and 2.67 digs.
