2022 Summer Ball Update - University of Minnesota Athletics - GopherSports.com

MINNEAPOLIS -- Halfway through the summer of 2022, numerous current and future members of the Gopher Baseball program have been competing on summer teams throughout the country. The Golden Gophers have 17 returners and several incoming freshmen currently placed throughout six different summer collegiate leagues across the country. As is standard, the Gophers have placed a majority of their players in the Northwoods League (14) scattered across eight different teams.

Minnesota players can also be found in the Prospect League (2), Appalachian League (2), Perfect Game League (1), Great Lakes League (1) and Coastal Plains League (1). More additions are expected throughout the summer as Minnesota continues to grow its roster in preparation for the 2023 season. Check out the mid-summer updates to see how our guys have been performing.

Appalachian League (2)
Jake Perry, Fr., INF (Kingsport Axmen) -- Perry played in 25 games, starting in 11 as a true freshman for the Gophers. He slashed .200/.250/.373 with eight hits, one triple, four RBI and 11 walks. Last summer he played for the Hopkins Flyers in American Legion ball. Perry had a monster summer, hitting .500 with 64 hits in 128 at bats, including 18 doubles, eight triples, 12 home runs and 55 RBI. He slugged 1.047 with a 1.623 OPS. So far this summer for Kingsport, Perry is hitting .349 with two home runs, 23 RBI, 27 runs and 30 hits. He leads the team in both slugging percentage (.558) and OP (1.020).

Gilbert Saunders, Incoming Fr., RHP/INF (Elizabethton River Riders) -- The 6-foot-4 two-way talent capped an impressive career at The Hill School this past spring positing a conference best .431 average (17-for-65), with seven home runs, 25 RBI and a 1.362 OPS. On the mound, he finished with 28 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched, making nine appearances for the Blues. The Gilbertsville, Pa., native finished with four homeruns in his final 24 at-bats including a two-homer day on April 30. Saunders is playing for the Elizabethton River Riders of the Appalachian League where he currently has a 1.69 ERA in three appearances and 5.1 innings pitched. He's also played in five games as a position player with three walks and a run scored.

Northwoods League (14)
Brett Bateman, So., OF (Willmar Stingers) -- Bateman was the only Gopher to start in all 52 games this past season and slashed .312/.363/.386 in 215 at bats (team-high) with 67 hits (team-high), 39 runs scored (tied for team-best), seven doubles and 13 RBI. He tallied 19 multi-hit games and hit safely in 14 straight games from April 8 through April 29. Last summer, he played in four games for the Willmar Stingers, hitting .353 in 17 at-bats. He also made two appearances on the mound, striking out two in one total inning pitched. In 2022, Bateman is currently second in the Northwoods League in stolen bases (19) and is amongst the league leaders in hits with 33. He's hitting .287 for the summer in 32 games with 22 runs and 16 walks.

Caden Capomaccio, Incoming Fr., RHP (Green Bay Rockers) -- The Green Bay, Wis., native will stay home and play for the Rockers this summer. Doubling as a two-way talent for the Tritons, Capomaccio led Notre Dame Academy to a Regional Championship finishing the spring leading the team in hits (25) and stolen bases (23) while scoring (20) runs and driving in 15 RBI at the plate. On the mound is where the 6-foot-1 right-hander flourished, finishing with a 6-1 record with one save in 44 innings pitched, amassing 63 strikeouts. This summer for Green Bay he's made one appearance (3.0 innings), striking out three with two hits and no earned runs.

Brady Counsell, Fr., INF (Kenosha Kingfish) -- The Milwaukee, Wis., native played the most games of any Gophers freshman, starting in 24 of the 36 games he played in. He slashed .200/.320/.283 with one home run, 10 RBI, 11 runs scored and five doubles. Last summer he played for the Stingers and hit .153 (23/150) with six doubles, one home run, 28 walks and 17 RBI. This summer for the Kingfish, Counsell is hitting .287 with two home runs, 14 RBI, four doubles and 13 walks. 

Randon Dauman, R-So., RHP (Kenosha Kingfish) -- Dauman pitched in 10 games, tallying an 8.59 ERA in 7.1 innings pitched with nine strikeouts and seven earned runs in his first year as a Gopher. This will be his second year with the Kenosha Kingfish as he appeared in 18 games in 2021, going 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA in 30.1 innings pitched. He tallied 36 strikeouts with 22 walks and just 14 earned runs on the summer. In 2022, Dauman is 0-1 in eight appearances (two starts), holding a 13.03 ERA in 9.2 innings pitched. He holds eight punchouts on the summer.

T.J. Egan, Incoming Fr., LHP (Minnesota Mud Puppies) -- The southpaw from Apple Valley, Minn., (Eastview H.S.) is following in his father Jim Egan's footsteps in playing for the Gophers. The 6-foot-5 lefty from Apple Valley was the ace of the Eastview Lightning this past spring. He finished with a 4-1 record on the mound in 38 innings pitched with 70 strikeouts. Egan was named South Suburban All-Conference, Minnesota Coaches Association/Play Baseball Minnesota All-Star selection and the Eastview Lightning Pitcher of the Year. Egan is playing for the Mud Puppies of the Northwoods League but hasn't yet made an appearance.

Easton Fritcher, Incoming Fr., LHP/OF (Rochester Honkers) -- One of the best all-around athletes in the state of Minnesota, Fritcher was a pitcher and outfielder for Hayfield H.S. The 2021 Post Bulletin All-Area Player of the Year hit .543 as a junior with eight home runs, 48 RBI, 52 runs scored and eight doubles. On the mound, Fritcher held a sensational 11-0 record with a 1.55 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 49.2 innings pitched. This past spring the 6-foot left-handed hitting outfielder gashed the competition with a .553 average with (42) hits, (6) home runs, (12) doubles, (3) triples, (34) RBI's, (52) runs scored, (22) walks and only (1) strikeout in 112 plate appearances. Additionally, he stole (30) bases and was caught stealing just once. On the mound, he logged 26 innings of work with 50 strikeouts, allowed only eight hits and posted a 0.52 ERA.

Kris Hokenson, Incoming Fr., LHP/OF (Minnesota Mud Puppies) -- A consensus top-10 overall player in the state of Minnesota by Perfect Game (No. 7) and Prep Baseball Report (No. 9), Hokenson was ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 158 overall player in the country. Hokenson finished his senior season as the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year in addition to be named the Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year, the Perfect Game Minnesota Player of the Year and the Class 4A Minnesota Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1 left-handed hitting outfielder and pitcher posted a .505 on-base percentage and slugged .479 while collecting (21) hits, (3) homeruns, (17) RBI's, (13) stolen bases in 2022. On the mound, the southpaw worked 61 innings, amassing 97 strikeouts while allowing only 31 hits in the states most competitive section. In 10 starts on the mound, Hokenson struck out double-digits five different times and allowed only a total of three earned runs in his final 34 innings of work. So far this summer, Hokenson is hitting .167 in two games, tallying one hit.

Michael Gurka, Jr., RHP (Mankato Moondogs) -- Gurka is pitching for the Moondogs this summer after making three appearances out of the bullpen for Minnesota in 2022. He registered a perfect 0.00 ERA in 2.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts, five walks and no hits. This is his first year playing in the Northwoods League and so far he's appeared in four games, striking out a pair in 1.1 innings pitched.

Brady Jurgella, Jr., Utility (Wisconsin Rapids Rafters) -- A junior college transfer from Madison College, Jurgella will make his debut for Minnesota in 2023. He hit .378 with three home runs and 49 RBI in JUCO in 2022, tallying 73 hits on the year. Jurgella led Madison to the 2021 NJCAA Division II World Series and was named to the Region 4 Rawlings Gold Glove Team as an outfielder. This summer, he's hitting .303 with two home runs and eight RBI for the Rapids Rafters, tallying 20 hits in 66 at bats.

Sam Malec, Fr., RHP (Willmar Stingers) -- Malec made 10 appearances out of the bullpen as a freshman, tallying a 9.88 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched. He struck out nine, walked eight and allowed 15 earned runs in 74 batters faced. This will be his second summer with the Stingers, and last summer he made 13 appearances on the mound, including three starts, posting a 2-1 record with a 5.34 ERA over 32 innings. He allowed 19 earned runs and struck out 27 while walking 19. This summer for Willmar he's made six appearances (five starts), going 3-2 with a 4.67 ERA in 34.2 innings pitched. He's also struck out 30 hitters.

Boston Merila, So., INF/OF (Mankato Moondogs) -- Merila had a big sophomore year for Minnesota, starting in 51 of the 52 games in 2022, slashing .267/.316/.361 with 50 hits and 18 RBI. He scored 29 runs, hit nine doubles and walked 19 times with four stolen bases. He also tallied a .966 fielding percentage, starting games at both second base and left field. This summer, Merila has played multiple positions for the Moondogs, hitting .360 with 27 hits in 75 at bats. He's driven in 13 RBI and has hit three doubles with 11 walks.

Tucker Novotny, Fr., LHP (Willmar Stingers) -- Novotny made six appearances, including one start for Minnesota as a freshman in 2022. He went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA, the best of any freshman on the team. He struck out 14, walked six and gave up just six earned runs in 63 batters faced and allowed zero runs in four of his six appearances. Last summer, he pitched for the Minnesota Mud Puppies of the Northwoods League, where he made four appearances, going 1-1 in 19.0 innings pitched with a 2.84 ERA . He allowed just six earned runs on the summer while striking out 17. In the summer of 2022, Novotny has made six appearances (three starts), holding a 2-0 record with a 4.67 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched.

Noah Rooney, Fr., LHP (Rochester Honkers) -- Rooney appeared in 16 games, posting a 6.33 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched as a true freshman in 2022 for the Gophers. He struck out 18, walked 11 and allowed 15 earned runs. This is his first year playing in the Northwoods League, where he was recently named the Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night on June 21, tossing six scoreless innings with three strikeouts while allowing only three hits. He's made six starts on the summer, tallying a 5.28 ERA in 29.0 innings pitched while striking out 20.

Will Semb, So., RHP (Green Bay Rockers) -- Semb joins the Rockers after making 23 appearances in 2022, going 1-5 with a 9.51 ERA in 23.2 innings pitched. He struck out 28 and allowed 25 earned runs and 32 hits while posting two saves, which led the team. Last summer he made 16 appearances for the Green Bay Rockers, going 2-2 with a 4.71 ERA in 28.2 innings pitched. He tallied 38 strikeouts with 21 walks and allowed just 15 earned runs. In 10 of his appearances, he did not allow any earned runs. In the summer of 2022, Semb is 1-5 in six starts with a 5.67 ERA in 27.0 innings pitched. He's tallied 29 strikeouts and has walked 19 hitters.

Coastal Plains League (3) -- 
Kyle Bork R-So., INF (Macon Bacon) -- Bork appeared in 36 games, starting in 27 during his sophomore year. He slashed .224/.398/.330 with 22 hits, four home runs and 20 RBI while totaling 13 runs and 11 walks. He's playing this summer for the Macon Bacon with teammate Jake Larson.

Jake Larson, Fr., INF (Macon Bacon) -- The Covington, Wash., native is playing for the Macon Bacon for his first season of summer ball in college. He played in 21 games in 2022 as a true freshman, including 11 starts. He slashed .209/.302/.271 with one home run and four RBI, tallying nine hits in 43 at bats.

Great Lake League (1) -- 
Dawson Hall, Fr., LHP (Hamilton Joes) -- The southpaw out of Kentucky made three appearances out of the bullpen in 2022, posting a 21.60 ERA with three strikeouts, four earned runs, four walks and four hits in 1.2 innings. This summer he's playing for the Hamilton Joes, where he's made six appearances (three starts). In 20.1 innings pitched, Hall holds a 3.98 ERA (0-1 record) with 13 strikeouts and 19 earned runs in 20.1 innings pitched.

Prospect League (1) -- 
Seth Clausen, Fr., RHP (Clinton Lumberkings) -- The right-hander made 14 appearances as a freshman, tallying an 8.31 ERA with 16 strikeouts and 15 walks in 17.1 innings pitched. He allowed 16 earned runs at 26 hits on the year. He plays for the Lumberkings in the Prospect League, where he is 0-2 with a 7.77 ERA in 22.0 innings pitched. Clausen has tallied 28 strikeouts on the summer.

Perfect Game League (1)
Noah DeLuga, So., LHP (Saugerties Stallions) -- DeLuga made 17 appearances for Minnesota in 2022, tallying a 12.67 ERA and a 1-1 record in 16.1 innings pitched, striking out 19 with 23 earned runs and 14 walks. He pitched for the Rockford Rivets of the Northwoods League during the last two summers.

Other Leagues (4)
Drew Berkland, Incoming Fr., C/OF (Utah MGF Marshalls) -- The Wayzata H.S. product ranks as the No. 5 overall prospect in the state by Perfect Game in addition to being the No. 1 player at his position and No. 67 player nationally. Prep Baseball Report ranks him as the No. 10 player in the state and No. 1 overall at his position. Named a Mr. Baseball Minnesota finalist in addition to being named All-Lake Conference, All Area and First Team All-Section in baseball for the Trojans. He finished his senior season with 20 hits, two home runs, (11) RBI, (5) stolen bases and (11) runs scored while playing catcher, center field, and infield. The 6-foot multi-sport star was also used as a weapon out of the Wayzata bullpen, positing a 2-0 mark on the mound with one save and a 1.10 ERA. Berkland was named a Minnesota Coaches Association/Play Ball Minnesota All-Star before heading west to play for the Utah MGF Marshalls, an elite 18u college prep team that consists of the best high school players from around the country. Berkland is currently hitting .377 (23-for-61) with three doubles, three triples, six HR, 28 RBI and nine stolen bases this summer.

Tristan Ellis, Incoming Fr., INF (West Allis Nationals) -- The 5-foot-10 rangy middle infielder and lead-off hitter doubled as the ace of the Panthers pitching staff this spring. Pacing the offense through 31 games, Ellis finished with a .375 average (36-for-96) to go along with (6) doubles, a triple, (9) stolen bases, (21) RBI's while reaching base at a staggering .474 clip. Equally as impressive were his numbers on the mound where he posted a 7-3 record with two saves in 67 innings pitched with 77 strikeouts. He was recently named First Team All-State Wisconsin, Woodland West First Team All-Conference, Woodland Conference Player of the Year, First Team All-Southeast District and the Division-I Southeast Player of the Year. He's playing at home with the West Allis Nationals this summer.

Sam Kennedy, Incoming Fr., RHP/IF -- The Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022, Kennedy will provide the Gophers with immediate help on the mound next year. In 2022, Kennedy posted a 3-1 record with a 0.64 ERA, striking out 48 in 22 innings pitched while surrendering just eight hits and 10 walks. As a senior, Kennedy led the Polars both at the plate and on the mound this past spring, finishing with a team-best .467 average with (28) hits, (6) doubles, (5) homeruns, (14) RBI's, (13) runs scored and (20) walks. On the mound, the hard-throwing righty logged 29 innings of work to go along with a 4-1 record, 59 strikeouts, allowed only two earned runs and finished with a 0.48 ERA.

Weber Neels, Incoming Fr., C/3B (Utah MGF Marshalls) -- Highly regarded as one of the nation's best prep catchers, Neels is currently ranked as the No. 40 overall backstop in the country (No. 486 overall) by PrepBaseballReport. Neels wrapped up an impressive career with East Ridge High School finishing as the Raptors leading hitter with an .368 average to go along with a team-leading (28) hits, (6) doubles, (5) home runs, (14) RBI's and (17) walks. Neels was recently a finalist for the Pioneer Press Metro East Player of the Year, named Star Tribune Second Team All-Metro and First Team All-Conference Suburban East, and named to the Minnesota Coaches Association/Play Ball Minnesota All-Star team. Neels is currently playing with future Gopher teammate Drew Berkland for the Utah MGF Marshalls. The 6-foot Cottage Grove native is currently hitting .415 (22-for-53) with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and 14 RBI this summer.
