Stevens Baseball Well-Represented in Summer Ball; Pron Highlights Ducks Participating in Top Leagues - Stevens Institute of Technology Athletics - Stevens Institute of Technology

HOBOKEN, N.J. (July 6, 2022)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team is again well represented in summer leagues throughout the country with 24 returning student-athletes sharpening their skills in preparation for the 2023 season.

This summer's placements are highlighted by three returning Ducks who have signed on to play in a pair of the top collegiate baseball leagues around the country. Rising season Anthony Pron rejoined the Northwoods League's Waterloo Bucks for yet another summer. Meanwhile, competing in the The Futures Collegiate Baseball League are rising juniors Jacob Buurman and Axel Johnson, who are pitching for the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Worcester Bravehearts, respectively.

In years past, the Ducks have sent several student-athletes to some of the top professional development leagues in the country including the Cape Cod League, Northwoods, Coastal Plain, Perfect Game, Texas Collegiate, South Florida Collegiate, New York Collegiate, and Futures Collegiate amongst others. See below for a full list of Stevens baseball's summer league placements.

"Summer baseball is such an important part of our program's culture," commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "In addition to our three most notable summer collegiate league placements, we are equally excited that several of our student-athletes and alumni will be competing together in leagues all around the country, such as the nearby New Jersey-based Metropolitan League and the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (ABCCL). The innings and at-bats that our student-athletes receive playing for these teams as well as the camaraderie that they develop during this summer environment has proven, over time, to be a key element to our team's success and overall chemistry."

Stevens completed the 2022 baseball campaign with a 29-16 record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. All totaled, three Ducks earned All-Region honors and seven were recognized the MAC Freedom for All-Conference honors. The Ducks also excelled off-the-field, posting a 3.696 team-GPA in the spring 2022 semester and currently maintain a 3.739 cumulative team-GPA.

Currently the Ducks have two active alumni competing in professional baseball. Right-handed pitcher Charlie Ruegger, selected by the New York Yankees in the 33rd round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft continues to toe the rubber in the organization, earning a pair of victories for the Hudson Valley Renegades to bring his career win total to 12. Left-handed pitcher Chandler Brierley is entering his second year with the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League, where he has two victories and a pair of saves. The Frontier League is considered by many to be one of the top independent leagues in the country with a steady stream of players finding their way into affiliated baseball.

Ruegger, Robert Robbins and David Garcia mark the three former players who reached affiliated professional baseball after their careers on Castle Point came to an end. Robbins joined the Chicago Cubs organization in February 2019 as a free agent signee after two stints out at Driveline Academy in Kent, Washington. Garcia, meanwhile, enjoyed a nine-year professional career spread across four organizations, reaching as high as AAA in 1979. Both Ruegger and Robbins played competitive summer baseball over their collegiate careers in Hoboken. Ruegger spent time for the Forest City Owls of Coastal Plain as well as the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters of the Northwoods League, while Robbins competed for the Pompano Beach Clippers of South Florida Collegiate, the Newark Pilots of Perfect Game Collegiate and the Forest City Owls.
