The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools recently announced its five regional Teachers of the Year, representing special education, alternative education and state preschool programs.
“These outstanding educators are sterling examples of teachers who champion their students and are dedicated to providing great learning experiences in the classroom,” Ted Alejandre, county superintendent of schools, said in a news release.
Following are the Teachers of the Year, the programs and regions they represent and their school sites.
• Janelle Carlson, East Valley, special education, Judson & Brown Elementary School in Redlands.
• Rosie Dunn, state preschool, Lucy Siegrist State Preschool in Hesperia.
• Carmen Palacios, alternative education, Victorville Education Center in Victorville.
• David Whitt, Desert/Mountain, special education, Joshua Circle Elementary School in Hesperia.
• Jeanette Young, West End, special education, Liberty Elementary School in Ontario.
Among the five regional teacher honorees, Whitt was chosen as County Schools’ Teacher of the Year for Student Services. He will represent County Schools in the countywide Teacher of the Year competition later this year.
About the teachers
Janelle Carlson has been in the classroom for 25 years, as a special education teacher and teaching adult education. She has taught in special education programs in Rancho Cucamonga and Redlands since 2002 and for the past four years has taught at Judson & Brown Elementary School in Redlands, according to the news release. She also teaches choir at Judson & Brown.
Rosie Dunn has taught in preschool classes in California and Nevada during the past 25 years. She has taught at Lucy Siegrist State Preschool in Hesperia since 2016, and she taught in the state preschool program for San Bernardino County Schools from 1996 to 2005.
Carmen Palacios has taught high school students in the Victorville Education Center since 2013. She has been with San Bernardino County Schools since 200 and served as a paraeducator for 13 years before she received her teaching credential.
David Whitt has taught in a variety of special education assignments for San Bernardino County Schools during the past 19 school years and has been teaching at Joshua Circle Elementary School in Hesperia since 2018.
Jeanette Young has been a special education teacher for San Bernardino County Schools for the past 15 years. At Liberty Elementary School in Ontario, she specializes in teaching autistic students.
The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools serves as an intermediate service agency between the California Department of Education and the 33 K-12 school districts in the county. The office works in collaboration with school districts, other agencies, families and the community at large to ensure success for the 403,000 K-12 students in San Bernardino County.
