Annual Cattle Baron’s Ball 2020 At-Home event set for Saturday - Greeley Tribune

The American Cancer Society of Northern Colorado invites community members to take part in the annual Cattle Baron’s Ball, kicking off at 8 p.m. Saturday through a virtual gala.

The 2020 ball is presented by The Weld Trust and is chaired by husband and wife duo, Gene and July Haffner.

Typically, the ball is an in-person affair, drawing around 900 people under a big white tent that celebrates the area’s western heritage while raising money for the American Cancer Society.

However, with COVID-19 safety guidelines restricting large gatherings, organizers have had to revamp the ball’s format this year to include a 45-minute gala that will be streamed live.

Canceling or postponing the event was never an option for organizers, said Gene Haffner.

“We have all been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and are challenged daily to creatively adapt business and social models and life’s activities in general,” said Gene Haffner. “People are still being diagnosed with cancer every day and they need the support and resources of the American Cancer Society now more than ever. Cancer doesn’t stop, so neither could we.”

Businesses and individuals are encouraged to host small western-themed gatherings in their homes or other locations to celebrate the ball’s 28th year.

The ball’s online program will feature an auction, entertainment and messages of hope and inspiration from special guests.

The event’s online paddle-raise will focus this year on raising money for cancer prevention and early detection services.

Prevention and early-detections are two of the most effective ways to save lives and reduce costs to patients, families and communities, organizers explained.

Community members can check out the event’s silent and premiere auctions prior to Saturday’s festivities.

While the ball is a much-anticipated annual gathering for many people, utilizing a virtual format allows anyone, anywhere to participate,

“One thing we know is that the northern Colorado community of leaders, businesses and volunteers are remarkable in their commitment to help people in need and continuing to support the fight against cancer,” Julie Haffner commented.

Money raised by the event will also help the American Cancer Society continue cancer research as well as support programs for cancer patients such as the 24/7 helpline.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide and global community-based volunteer health organization that is dedicated to eliminating cancers of all kinds.  The organization supports access to care, fosters innovation in cancer research and treatment, works with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and more.
