Ski Team, Ski Ball Committee Announce Fundraiser In Lieu of Ski Ball - University of Colorado Athletics - CUBuffs.com

BOULDER—The Colorado Ski Team and Ski Ball Committee went live with a six-week virtual fundraiser Tuesday that will help offset the funds the team usually receives from the annual Ski Ball.

The next Ski Ball will be the 50th Anniversary of the legendary event, but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 50th Anniversary of the event has been postponed until 2021.  The team and committee are asking supporters to contribute what they can to assist the ski team in any way they can during these unprecedented times.

"The Ski Ball is a social occasion," CU Coach Richard Rokos said. "It's everybody coming together, in person, current athletes, former athletes, all coaches.  Unfortunately we can't have the 50th version this year, so we will do that next year.  The secondary part of Ski Ball is the fundraising element.  We still need that to survive, especially this year.  We need to stay alive as a program and a sport and save our existence."

In assistance with the Alumni-C Club and Buff Club, the Ski Ball Committee put together a menu of items that supporters can donate to help offset costs.  Anything from donating the value of a normal Ski Ball ticket to helping offset the purchase of a new van for the team.  Other items include gas cards, new tires for the vans, one day of lodging for the team when they're competing or training, and much more.  A full list of the menu items is available here, where you can also donate.

Ski Ball dates back to 1970 when then-head coach Bill Marolt began the event at the suggestion of Bob Kendall, one of his skiers, who told Marolt the team should do an annual fundraiser.

"The first one was at the Elks Club in north Boulder," Marolt said. "It's evolved, it's had different looks and different feels.  I think for the last six or seven years, it's rejuvenated itself.  It's part of the tradition and history of the CU ski team."

Marolt, who won four NCAA Individual Championships as a skier from 1963-68, became the head coach from 1968-79, winning the first seven of a streak of eight straight team NCAA Championships and became CU's athletic director from 1984-96.  Marolt also was President of the USSA from 1996-2004, and he detailed why it's important to support Olympic sports now more than ever.

"I think all Olympic sports will be under pressure," Marolt said. "How do things evolve?  It doesn't mean we go back to where we were.  I don't know what it will look like, but what everybody involved with an Olympic sport needs to be thinking about, how do we create resources to continue these programs?  It's important to remember where we've been, what we've created, and not let it go by the wayside.  How do we drive into the future so it's going to be even more successful because it affects a lot of people's lives."

The Ski Ball committee has always been an integral part of the ski team's operations as the driving force behind Ski Ball.  The committee is chaired by Sue Forward Wristen and includes ski team alumni Stephen LeBalng, Rick Foster, and Eric Meyer, as well as current athletes and staff of the ski team and other CU staff members.
