DURHAM, N.C.— With the Duke women's soccer team in the middle of week five of preseason practice for the 2020 campaign, the Blue Devils continue to make progress as they prepare for the start of the season.
Following its first full intrasquad scrimmage this past Saturday, Duke returned to the pitch for practice Tuesday.
A trio of goalkeepers led by redshirt senior Brooke Heinsohn have been working hard with goalkeeper coach Lane Davis. Heinsohn, sophomore Ruthie Jones and junior Holly Stam continue to battle for the starting nod as the season approaches.
"It's been great to get back on the field since the beginning of preseason and we are getting better with each scrimmage," said Heinsohn. "We've been preparing for both the intrasquad scrimmage this weekend and our season opener soon, so practices have been intense and more structured to our game plan. Now is the time we need to make sure we're doing all we can to be prepared for the scrimmage as it's our last bit of game-like preparation before regular season play starts. I'm really proud of the team and how hard we've been working both on and off the field to make sure we're all ready for what's ahead!"
After suffering an injury in the 2019 preseason, junior Sydney Simmons officially returned to practice last week and has been very impressive so far during her time on the field. As a rookie, Simmons started 13-of-17 matches and was as a key contributor in the midfield seeing action in 1,196 minutes.
"Being back on the field with my team this past week has been incredible," added Simmons. "I've missed the competitiveness of our practices and the standards that we hold ourselves to every time we step on the field. I'm finally getting the chance to play with the freshmen and sophomores for the first time and I'm loving every bit of it. I'm so grateful that our season is commencing despite the circumstances. There really is nothing more rewarding than being able to lace up our cleats every day to go play the sport we love."
Duke is scheduled to have its final preseason scrimmage Saturday.
"We have big expectations and aspirations for the year and I'm really excited to see what the season has in store for us," added Simmons.
