Every weekday morning, I spend a lot of time reading the news - newspapers, magazines, websites and apps - so I can bring you “In the Papers.” There’s so much to read and so much to share that now every Friday I want to highlight some of the best stuff I’ve seen, my five favorite stories of the week from NY1’s reporters, the local papers and beyond.
Here’s the first edition of "Pat’s Five Favorites":
1. What better way to put the post office to the test than to mail some letters? With the USPS wrapped up in politics, NY1’s Clodagh McGowan tracked 50 local letter deliveries from start to finish and found barely half of them arrived on time.
2. It’s time for the NYPD to give the people their streets back and get rid of the barricades around precinct houses. THE CITY reports the barricades went up in May when police brutality protests surged and never came down.
3. Thursday’s news was dominated by tributes to Mets legend Tom Seaver. My NY1 colleague Roger Clark reminded me that the “41” in his Twitter name is there because of Number 41. Howie Rose told the New York Post that he’s never heard a bigger ovation. And New York Times baseball writer Tyler Kepner said much of Seaver’s success came from his intelligence and analysis of the game.
4. The Wall Street Journal tested 50 face masks for comfort, style and breathability. The overall winner was an $18 mask from a company called Wayre.
5. And the buzzy new exhibit at the reopened Metropolitan Museum of Art isn’t even in the museum. It’s a wall on the roof. The big, curved structure, from artist Hector Zamora, is 100 feet long and 11 feet tall. Gothamist writer Scott Lynch called the outdoor exhibit “resoundingly appropriate for our times.”
