The Seattle Sounders are playing in their fourth MLS Cup Final in five years and will be looking to win their second straight and third overall. This time around the Sounders will visit the Columbus Crew SC on Saturday.
I figured now would be a great time to look at the five most memorable games in Sounders-Crew history.
The Sounders didn’t waste much time laying the groundwork for a potential rivalry with the Crew, hiring away Sigi Schmid to be their head coach under contentious circumstances. The first meeting between the teams ended in a 1-1 tie as well, but the rivalry got a kickstart in the return leg in Columbus. The Crew were riding a record 22-match home unbeaten streak and the two teams were in contention for the Supporters’ Shield during the late-season matchup. The Sounders grabbed an early lead through Roger Levesque and some strong play allowed them to go into the 80th minute clinging to that 1-0 advantage when the Crew were awarded a penalty. Not only did Tyrone Marshall pick up a yellow card for arguing over the penalty, but video also seemed to capture him making a divot on the penalty spot. Guillermo Barros Schelotto missed the penalty and the Sounders held on for the victory.

The Sounders entered this game 9-9-6 (W-L-T) and were still working towards their second ever playoff appearance. They would end the season in fourth place but the most significant thing that happened in this game was the Sounders saw their first-ever hattrick scored. It was scored by Blaise Nkufo. He scored his first goal in the fourth minute, which at the time was the fastest ever goal scored in Sounders history. His second game in the 39th minute and his last came in the the 75th minute. He may have only scored five goals in his Sounders history but his first three were special.

Just a few weeks after dismantling the Crew on the road, the Sounders were looking to win their second straight Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when they played host. The Crew jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Kevin Burns’ goal in the 24th minute. The Sounders would fight back on the first of two goals from Sanna Nyassi in the 38th minute. The Sounders got their game winning goal in the 66th minute when Nyassi bagged his second of the night. The Sounders would lift their second U.S. Open Cup trophy in their three consecutive Open Cup trophies.

It would take less than a year for the Sounders to see their second hattrick in club history. This time it was Federal Way’s own Lamar Neagle. He, just like Nkufo, scored in the fourth minute. His second came in the 21st minute and his third and final came in the 70th in the Sounders 6-2 win at CenturyLink Field.

This game is remembered for different types of reasons. Yes, the Sounders won 1-0 while being down a man after Leo Gonzalez received a red card in the 7th minute (the fastest in Sounders history). But what makes it really stand out is Eddie Johnson’s “pay me” celebration after scoring the lone goal in the 14th minute. He didn’t get his wish as 2013 was his final season with the club.
