What to expect from Ball
Joe Vardon, NBA senior writer: He's missed a month, so, you start with his wind. But he's 19, so he probably didn't lose too much of his conditioning over his time off. I worry about his ball skills next — surgery surely limited what he could do, as far as shooting, handling and passing go. I think back to LaMelo's first game as a pro, in Cleveland. He didn't score, missed all five shots, and committed three turnovers. Oh, and then his postgame video call with the media was hacked.
I don't think tonight will go THAT poorly, and he obviously improved from that debut to be the clear favorite for Rookie of the Year, but he could struggle some in his return. Just don't expect TOO much, is the deal here.
How does this boost the Hornets as the playoffs approach?
Vardon: The key for the Hornets is to hang onto eighth place. In the NBA's play-in format, both the No. 7 and 8 seeds only need to win one game to reach the playoffs. The ninth and 10th-place teams have to win twice to get in. Entering play tonight, the Hornets have no real chance of getting to No. 6 (thus avoiding the play-in), or, really, even catching No. 7 Miami, which is 2 1/2 games in front of Charlotte. I mean, it's possible but unlikely.
Anyway, the Pacers are just a game behind the Hornets for eighth, and Charlotte is just 3-7 in its last 10. Adding LaMelo back into the mix, while Gordon Hayward remains out, is crucial.
