Long Ball Proves Costly for Huskies - Northern Illinois University Athletics

BUFFALO – The Northern Illinois University softball team suffered a 5-3 setback in the series opener with Buffalo at Nan Harvey Field on Friday afternoon.

NIU (15-26, 9-16) fell behind early, 2-0, after a leadoff solo home run by Buffalo's (15-27, 13-14) Alexis Matheny and an RBI double in the bottom of the second.

Katie Keller cut the deficit in half with an RBI single in the third to score Megan Guericke. However, another Buffalo leadoff homer in the bottom of the third and a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Bulls' lead to 5-1.

The Huskies responded in the top of the sixth. With runners at second and third and one out, Carley Goetschius singled to the pitcher to drive in Keller. Ellis Erickson, who came in to pinch run for Bianca Barone, scored from second on an error by Buffalo's pitcher. Unfortunately, those would be the only runs the Huskies would score in the game.

Keller led the way for NIU at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

NIU continues its series at Buffalo with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. Fans can find information on how to watch and follow the game on the softball schedule on NIUHuskies.com.
