Bruce Bochy's perfect Logan Webb 'wiffle ball with velocity' comparison - NBC Sports Bay Area

The Giants have been a Dune-sized story of surprises this season. Whether it be LaMonte Wade Jr., Brandon Crawford's offense, Buster Posey's resurgence, Brandon Belt's power or Darin Ruf's overall importance, nobody saw this coming.

Logan Webb's rise to Giants ace is just as big of a surprise to those outside of the Giants. As Webb caught fire, so did the Giants.

It's easy to forget just how young the right-handed starting pitcher is. Webb made his MLB debut in 2019, Bruce Bochy's final season managing the Giants, and was only 22 years old at the time. He finished with a 5.22 ERA over eight starts with Bochy as his manager.

The numbers don't stand out as Webb struggled with his command. However, Bochy knew Webb had much more than the numbers showed. He saw his nasty stuff, and was just waiting for the rest of the world to see it too.

"Oh man, I love Logan Webb," Bochy said Wednesday to 95.7 The Game's Damon Bruce. "I loved Logan when he came up with us. I don't know how you don't like a guy that can throw a 94, 95 mile per hour sinker with that kind of movement. He's got a slider and he's got a devastating changeup. I mean, it's a wipeout changeup.

"And now, he's got command of it."

In his third season with the Giants, his first in a full 162-game season, Webb has turned into a dominant arm on the hill for manager Gabe Kapler. Through 24 appearances -- 23 starts -- Webb is 10-3 with a 2.86 ERA. He has 141 strikeouts in 132 1/3 innings and his WHIP has gone down from 1.56 to 1.10.

As he fixed some mechanical issues and found his command, Webb's strikeouts per nine innings have gone up from 7.6 last season to 9.6 this season, and his walks have gone down from 4.0 to 2.2

"Once he felt that sense of belonging, this is what you're gonna see," Bochy said. "He should be a horse for a while. I guarantee when hitters face him, they go, 'Oh jeeze.'

"I mean, he's got both sides of the plate covered with movement with the slider and sinker running in and he's got that changeup."

Bochy then offered the perfect analogy for Webb's ability.

"It's like playing wiffle ball with velocity."

Chef's kiss.

If you've picked up a pencil-thin yellow plastic bat once, you know just how impossible it is to hit a wiffle ball with velocity. So do Webb's opponents this season.
