Five Wolverines Named to USA Hockey Camp Roster

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Five members of the University of Michigan ice hockey team have been named to the USA World Junior Championship preliminary roster, it was announced on Tuesday (Nov. 30).
Matty Beniers, Thomas Bordeleau, Luke Hughes, Mackie Samoskevich and Jacob Truscott have been named to the 31-man roster and are set to report on Dec. 12. The final 25-player roster will be announced at a later date.
The five players will miss the Great Lakes Invitational in late December -- games versus Michigan Tech (Dec. 29) and Western Michigan (Dec. 31).
The 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship will be held Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.
Beniers captured gold last year with the United States, along with Wolverines Brendan Brisson and Cam York. Beniers scored one goal, two assists and won 48 faceoffs in the tournament. He later went on to be named to the U.S. senior team, winning a bronze medal this past spring.
This will be redemption for Bordeleau, who was on track to compete last year before COVID protocols left him off the roster the day the team departed for Alberta.
A year after winning a silver medal at the World U17 Hockey Challenge, Hughes did not take part in the World U-18 Championship because of surgery. He returned for the USA Summer Showcase, along with Samoskevich and Truscott.
The U.S. looks to defend its gold from last year and take its sixth medal in seven years. The Stars and Stripes took bronze in 2016 and 2018, gold in 2017 and silver in 2019.
Michigan players have earned 20 medals with USA Hockey at the World Juniors since 1980.
