TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Ball State baseball team was back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Florida A&M. The Cardinals improved to 5-6 on the year, while the Rattlers fell to 5-7 on the season, after BSU picked up two victories on Saturday.
Trenton Quartermaine made it four-consecutive games with a homer in game one, before the streak ended in game two. Amir Wright has reached base safely in 11-straight games after reaching safely in both games today.
Game One – Ball State 7, FAMU 4
The Rattlers got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by L.J. Bryant.
Decker Scheffler started the top of the second inning with a single to left field. Zach Lane came up big for the Cardinals with a two-out double to left field that drove in Scheffler. Ball State cut the FAMU lead to one, 2-1.
After Trennor O'Donnell struck out the side in the bottom of the second, Quartermaine tied the game in the top of the third with a solo homer to right center. Quartermaine has now homered in four-consecutive games.
The Rattlers got something going in the bottom of the fourth, as the first two batters singled. O'Donnell was unfazed and was able to work himself out of a jam.
Quartermaine led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to left field. After a pitching change, Andre Orselli homered to left field to make it back-to-back shots for the Cardinals. Ball State held a 5-2 lead after four and a half innings.
The Rattlers added two runs in the home half of the fifth to cut the Cardinal lead to 5-4 after five innings in the books.
Orselli started the top of the seventh inning with a walk and advanced on a passed ball. Ryan Peltier reach on a fielder's choice as Orselli got thrown out in a rundown. Adam Christianson got aboard the home run train as he launched a two-shot to right. The Cardinals took a 7-4 lead to the bottom of the seventh.
Maxwell McKee pitched a perfect seventh inning, with two strikeouts to close out the 7-4 victory in game one.
Quartermaine, Scheffler, and Christianson all tallied two hits for the game. Christianson notched three RBIs in game one to lead BSU. O'Donnell picked up the win and moved to 1-1 on the year. O'Donnell went 4 2/3 innings with six strikeouts and surrendered four earned runs. McKee collected his first save of the season with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. McKee finished with four strikeouts and scattered two hits.
Hunter Viets got the loss for FAMU with four innings pitched with three earned runs.
Game 2 – Ball State 6, FAMU 1
Ty Johnson threw an absolute gem on the mound for the Cardinals in game two. He threw six innings of no-hit ball. He surrendered just one hit, which came in the bottom of the seventh. He surrendered just one run and improved to 1-1.
Game two of the day started out much slower than the first game. Neither team was able to get on the board for the first two innings.
In the top of the third, Wright walked to start the inning. After a fly out, Nick Powell recorded a two-run home run over the right field wall to put BSU on the board. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third.
Wright started the top of the fifth with a single to second base. He advanced to second on a passed ball. Lane dropped down a sac bunt to the catcher to move Wright to third. Powell drove a ball deep to center, which allowed Wright to tag up and score.
Scheffler started the top of the sixth off with a single to right. Peltier notched an RBI double to right center as Scheffler scored. Matthew Rivera followed with a pinch-hit single to center as Peltier scored on the play. Ball State took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
Tyler Hinrikus drew a pinch-hit walk to start the seventh. He advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on an error. After Peltier drew a walk, Christianson collected a sac fly to center to score Hinrikus from third.
The Rattlers busted the no-hit bid with a single. FAMU ended the shutout with one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Powell finished game two with a perfect 3-for-3 game with three RBIs. Wright added a two-hit performance. Steven Washilewski pitched an inning with one strikeout and gave up just one hit.
Dallas Tease picked up the loss behind five innings of work with two strikeouts and gave up three earned runs on four hits.
Ball State wraps up the series with Florida A&M on Sunday on Moore-Kittles Field. First pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
