Ball State Sweeps NIU In Saturday Doubleheader - Northern Illinois University Athletics

DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader on Saturday at Ralph McKinzie Field by the Ball State Cardinals, falling 13-0 in the seven-inning opener and 6-1 in game two.

"Ball State pitched really well today," said head coach Mike Kunigonis. "[Matt] Salomonson and [Connor] Langreder gave us more than a chance to win game two, but we just didn't hit today. We had our opportunities to score runs in both games and unfortunately we didn't. We just have to do a better job with runners and scoring positions and finding ways to score."

Redshirt-Freshman pitcher Matt Salomonson (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College Prep) made his first career start on the mound in the nightcap, allowing one hit while facing the minimum in the first two innings. Ball State's Justin Conant led off the third with a single, followed by a walk to Matthew Rivera. After a Zach Lane sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Amir Wright was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Cardinals scored their first run when Trenton Quartermaine was also hit by a pitch, bringing home Conant for a 1-0 lead.

NIU (7-28, 6-14 MAC) had a chance to get out of the inning with just one run allowed, but an errant throw to start a potential double play allowed Rivera to score and make a 2-0 Ball State lead. Hunter Dobbins then singled to left field to drive in a third Cardinals run. Salomonson struck out Zach Cole and got Ryan Peltier to foul out to end the inning.

Ball State's (23-14, 17-4 MAC) Trennor O'Donnell allowed a leadoff single to Carlos Aranda (Santo Domingo, D.R./Ellsworth CC) in the bottom of the first. He then got a double play and proceeded to retire the next seven Huskies. The Cardinals extended their lead to 5-0 with two runs in the fourth.

The Huskies got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Aranda singled leading off the frame, his second hit of the game. After a flyout and a strikeout, Aranda stole second with Eric Erato (Sussex, Wis./Sussex Hamilton) at bat. Erato hit a single deep up the middle. Conant tracked it down in the hole, but his throw to first was wide of the bag allowing Aranda to score to make it a 5-1 ballgame.

NIU's Connor Langreder (West De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) entered the game from the bullpen with one out in the top of the fifth and proceeded to throw 2.2 innings of scoreless relief before Ball State put another run on the board in the eighth, when a Rivera double scored Ryan Peltier to put the Cardinals up 6-1. Ball State's Nate Dohm entered the game on the mound in the seventh and held NIU scoreless for the final three innings to get the save in a 6-1 Cardinals victory.

Aranda, Erato and Andre Demetral (Rochester, Mich./Florence Darling Tech) each had two hits in game two with Aranda adding a pair of walks.

Ball State got 6.1 shutout innings from Tyler Schweitzer in the opener as it went to win 13-0 in seven innings. Schweitzer scatter six hits while allowing one walk with seven strikeouts. The Cardinals scored four runs in the first off of Kyle Seebach (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle Twp.). Scott Combs (Northville, Mich./Michigan State) and Malik Peters (Calumet City, Ill./Mount Carmel) were both 2-for-3 at the plate in game one, but the Huskies left eight runners on base.

The two teams resume their weekend series on Sunday, April 24 at 12 p.m.
