No. 6 Seed Mastodons Take On Top Seed Ball State in MIVA Championship - Purdue Fort Wayne Athletics

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team is set to travel to Muncie, Ind. for the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship match against No. 1 seed Ball State on Saturday, April 23 (7 p.m.).

If the Mastodons win, they will clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles. The NCAA selection show is on Sunday, April 24 at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Postseason Notes
• Saturday will be the fourth matchup between the Mastodons and Cardinals in the MIVA Championship match. The three prior championships 1990, 1991 and 1994. Ball State won two of those three matchups. The Mastodons won in 1991. 
• As the No. 6 seed, Purdue Fort Wayne would be the lowest seed to win the MIVA tournament title in MIVA history.
• Purdue Fort Wayne would be the lowest seed to win a conference tournament since seventh-seeded UC Santa Barbara won the MPSF in 2011 and went to the national championship match.
• A win would be Purdue Fort Wayne's sixth MIVA tournament title, and pave the way for their seventh trip to the NCAA tournament.
• Ball State has not won a MIVA tournament since 2002. The Mastodons have won two since then, 2006 and 2007.
• This is Purdue Fort Wayne's 11th trip to the MIVA championship match. The Mastodons are 5-5 all-time in the MIVA final.
• This is the first trip to the MIVA championship under head coach Ryan Perrotte.

In The Tournament...
Rico Wardlow is averaging 3.14 kills per set, a .583 hitting percentage and 0.71 blocks per set.
Vicente Ibarra is terminating 4.29 kills per set with a .421 hitting clip.
Jon Diedrich is averaging 4.86 kills per set with a .333 hitting percentage.
Zach Solomon is dishing out 13.57 assists per set and digging out 2.57 attacks per set. His assist rate would be the best in the country if extended over a season.
Kade Bontrager is averaging 2.43 kills and 4.57 digs per set.
Troy Gooch is averaging 2.86 digs per set.
Cody Johnson is averaging 0.86 blocks per set.
• The Mastodons have just five reception errors.
• The 'Dons are hitting .351.
• The 'Dons are averaging 16.29 kills per set, 15.71 assists per set, 13.57 digs per set, all of which would lead the country if extended out over a season.
• Purdue Fort Wayne's average margin of victory in sets this postseason is 2.00.

Know Your Foe
Since Feb. 21, 2019, the 'Dons are 3-4 in the last seven matches against Ball State. The last time the 'Dons and Cardinals played three times in a year was back in 2013. The 2013 season was also the last time the 'Dons and Cardinals played in the MIVA Tournament. The Cardinals won the match in straight sets. The Cardinals enter Saturday's match ranked No. 7 in the nation. Ball State is 22-3 overall and boast a 13-1 record at home. The Cardinals lone home loss was against Loyola Chicago back on Feb. 19. Offensively, the Cardinals are led by Kaleb Jenness, Angelos Mandilaris and Quinn Isaacson. The three student-athletes were named to the All-MIVA First Team. Jenness was named MIVA Player of the Year. He leads the Cardinals in total kills (378), kills per set (4.67) and is hitting .398 per set. Mandilaris is second on the Cardinals in total kills (275), kills per set (4.17) and hits .329. Both Jenness and Mandilaris were named AVCA Player of the Week during the season. Isaacson leads the nation in assists per set (11.35). He also leads the Cardinals in total digs (175) and digs per set (2.06).
