STILLWATER, Okla. — Arkansas will start freshman left hander Hagen Smith on Saturday in its NCAA regional game against Oklahoma State.

The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Cowboys’ O’Brate Stadium.

Smith (6-2, 4.86 ERA) has not started since a May 14 game against Vanderbilt. He pitched 2 2/3 innings that night, his second-shortest stint this season.

The Razorbacks used Smith in a relief role at Alabama on May 21 and against Florida at the SEC Tournament on May 27. He worked a perfect inning and struck out two in his 16-pitch outing against the Gators.

Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn previously said Smith was battling arm fatigue and indicated that he was hopeful some lower usage would refresh him for the postseason.

“We just felt like this would be a good time to let the 18-year-old have a little time away from starting,” Van Horn said May 19.

Smith was in Arkansas’ starting rotation for 13 weekends during the regular season. He pitched into at least the fifth inning in nine starts, but struggled with command toward the end of the regular season.

Beginning with his April 23 start at Texas A&M, Smith did not make it past the fourth inning three times in four starts. He walked 16 over 17 innings in his final five appearances of the regular season, including 1 1/3 innings of relief at Alabama.

Smith will be matched against one of college baseball’s top pitchers Saturday in Stillwater. Oklahoma State held its top pitcher, right hander Justin Campbell (9-2, 3.43 ERA), for the second game of the regional.

Campbell, who has 133 strikeouts and 23 walks in 94 1/3 innings, was named a second-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper earlier this week.

Campbell is a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. Baseball America rates the 6-7 redshirt sophomore the No. 43 prospect for this year’s MLB Draft.

CORRECTION: The date of Smith’s relief appearance at the SEC Tournament was initially incorrect.
