“I've Always Played A Premium Ball But Now I've Decided To Switch... Here's Why" - Golf Monthly
We all adopt different strategies when it comes to the golf ball we play, ranging from “anything I find” to “only what the tour pros play”. Until not that long ago I would have put myself fairly firmly in the latter camp. But things change – I’m getting older and ball technology has progressed. Although I’ve played to a handicap of between 5 and 7 for a quarter of a century, I’ve never been blessed with a tour swing speed and certainly am not now as the big 6-0 looms ever closer.
Realistically, I, like many others, don’t swing it fast enough to reap the full performance benefits of the best tour-calibre, premium balls in the long game, while simultaneously craving and relying on the short-game feel and control of their multi-layer constructions and urethane covers. Until relatively recently, this combination meant a bit of a compromise one way or the other for those with sub-tour swing speeds but, put simply, if I can’t perform on and around the greens, I have little chance of playing to handicap, hence leaning towards tour balls for their short-game benefits.
Urethane has long been the tour ball cover of choice and that is where premium balls have had their most tangible edge – the optimum in feel and performance around the greens. But more and more of the best mid-price golf balls now also feature urethane covers and multi-layer constructions that have taken their performance much closer to that of tour models. Not only that, but they also often specifically target those not blessed with the swing speeds certain tour models really require. They have formed part of a mid-price ‘superbreed’, if you like, although admittedly some are significantly more ‘mid-price’ than others.
One such ball is the latest TaylorMade Tour Response, a three-piece model with a 70-compression, Hi-Spring Core designed to help those with sub-optimal swing speeds generate as much speed as possible in a soft-feeling golf ball. Sounds just the ticket for me, right? And so it has proved. Having now played the Tour Response extensively for several months, I’ll be brutally honest - I can’t really tell the difference between this model and TaylorMade's premium TP5 balls in either performance or looks. Judge me for that, if you like, but that is the truth.
That element of looks is perhaps surprisingly important. Not only does the urethane cover have to feel right, it also has to look right, and the cover on the white version, in particular, does indeed look right to someone who has played predominantly tour-calibre balls for many years. The reality is that if the cover doesn’t look right – some urethane covers just don’t – it could prove a bridge too far when it comes to belief, and belief in what you’re playing is everything. Any niggling doubt that you might just be giving something up by playing this ball, and you’re almost certainly ‘done’ before you even tee off. Tour Response looks and feels right to me.
Is price a factor? Well, yes and no. Yes, £10 a dozen less than the premium TP5 models does represent some sort of saving, depending on how many you get through. But with an RRP of £39.99 a dozen, it’s still not exactly cheap at nearly £3.50 a ball. So, no, it’s much more that I can now get the look and feel I want in a ball more suited to the speed at which I swing the club.
All of which is to say that I’m pretty much a convert to the TaylorMade Tour Response, which I’ve been playing extensively for months now in its three different guises: white, yellow and the slightly funky Tour Response Stripe version that certainly stands out from the crowd.

Watch: A barefoot John Daly hit a golf ball over an Ohio highway onto high school football field - Golfweek
When Matt Considine grew up in Akron, Ohio, he spent time as a student staring out of a third-story window while attending Archbishop Hoban High School thinking about his view of a perfect golf shot.
His vision was hitting a ball from the school across Interstate 76 onto the school’s football field.
Considine’s dream became a reality this week.
On Tuesday, Considine posted a video of a barefooted John Daly, in town this week for the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, hitting the shot over Interstate 76, onto the football field.
Considine now lives in Chicago and is the founder of The NewClub Golf society.
“He’s got way too much club, no more than a 9 iron to the first goal post and 3 iron to the second,” Considine tweeted. “All downhill with a crosswind that trends to help a draw.”
Daly is paired with Jesper Parnevik and Shane Bertsch for the first two days at Bridgestone.
Meanwhile, Ohio Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Bruning cautioned others about trying to copy Daly’s shot.
“Driving on the interstate should be limited to vehicles,” Bruning said. “Unfortunately there’s no mulligan if a ball goes astray and hits a moving vehicle at full speed.”

John Daly Hits Golf Ball Over Interstate 76 in Ohio, Just Because - Sports Illustrated
Considering John Daly’s extensive body of work as a beer drinker and hell-raiser, the famed golfer’s latest stunt is relatively innocuous.
After all, the authorities weren’t involved—at least not to our knowledge.
Still, the long-driving PGA Tour veteran caught our attention prior to competing in this week’s Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at Akron, Ohio. That’s because he blasted a drive over Interstate 76 in Akron and onto the football field at Archbishop Hoban High School.
Have a look for yourself in the video below.

Fortunately, Daly has plenty of muscle to power his shot easily across the highway. Authorities, however, warn the rest of us not to try this at home.
“Driving on the interstate should be limited to vehicles,” Ohio Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Bruning told USA TODAY. “Unfortunately there’s no mulligan if a ball goes astray and hits a moving vehicle at full speed.”

49ers roster: UDFA Marcelino McCrary-Ball has some versatility - Niner Noise
Undersized but versatile, 49ers undrafted rookie Marcelino McCrary-Ball has some traits that could earn him consideration for long-term development.
It makes reasonable sense why former Indiana defensive back Marcelino McCrary-Ball went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft.
At 6-foot-0 and 214 pounds, and having redshirted two full years at the collegiate level, the 23-year-old McCrary-Ball is certainly undersized for a safety or a linebacker, and it’s important to note the San Francisco 49ers officially list him at the latter position on their offseason roster despite him being a safety with the Hoosiers.
The final part of the above statement isn’t indicative, of course, as there are plenty of linebacker/safety hybrids out there. In many cases, these new-age defenders epitomize how defenses are reacting to the pass-happy nature of today’s NFL.

That said, McCrary-Ball might not have the thump to cut it as a linebacker, and his coverage abilities are arguably on the weaker side, too.
Probably not the best-case tweener argument heading into his rookie season.
Nevertheless, McCrary-Ball does have some workable traits the Niners may look to develop over a season or two, so let’s break down what’s in store for him in 2022.
How Marcelino McCrary-Ball impresses 49ers in year one
Hybrid defenders are certainly sought-after players, especially if they don’t pose liabilities in one spot of the field over the other. In McCrary-Ball’s case, as pointed out by his NFL Draft Buzz profile, he makes up for whatever concerns regarding his small stature with a tough, physical mentality.
In short, don’t look for him to back down from a challenge in either pass coverage or against the run, and that’ll serve him well if he winds up closer to the line of scrimmage. And with 5.5 sacks over his last three played seasons, McCrary-Ball’s ability to serve as a blitzer also has to be taken into account.
If those traits show up during training camp and in the preseason, his stock will surely rise.
Why Marcelino McCrary-Ball flames out before Week 1
There’s always the concern with the “Jack of all trades, master of none” argument surrounding hybrid-type players, and that could surely be applied here.
McCrary-Ball might be capable of delivering some thump against smaller running backs and wide receivers, but that won’t be so easy at the pro level with the serious ramp-up in competition. Despite a strong frame, it’s still small.
On top of that, his scouting profile still pointed out coverage lapses, and while his 4.51 40-yard time is certainly respectable to suggest he can keep up with NFL-level receivers, it’s still fair enough to worry about him anticipating routes correctly and maintaining discipline.
Chances Marcelino McCrary-Ball makes 49ers’ 53-man roster
As far as the 14 undrafted players San Francisco brought aboard after the 2022 NFL Draft, McCrary-Ball certainly finds himself towards the weakest end of the bubble heading into training camp.
Sure, the 49ers bid farewell to a former hybrid safety/linebacker type in Marcell Harris this offseason, but other players like Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles have far greater a pedigree and trust from the team, and it isn’t as if the road to securing a back-end linebacker spot is going to be easy with the amount of depth the Niners currently have there.
Heck, even Flannigan-Fowles should be considered on the bubble, too.
McCrary-Ball might flash here and there during preseason games, yet it’s likely San Francisco is looking at a practice-squad designation for him in year one, hopefully turning that developmental status into something useful for 2023 and beyond.

Stevens Baseball Well-Represented in Summer Ball; Pron Highlights Ducks Participating in Top Leagues - Stevens Institute of Technology Athletics - Stevens Institute of Technology
This summer's placements are highlighted by three returning Ducks who have signed on to play in a pair of the top collegiate baseball leagues around the country. Rising season Anthony Pron rejoined the Northwoods League's Waterloo Bucks for yet another summer. Meanwhile, competing in the The Futures Collegiate Baseball League are rising juniors Jacob Buurman and Axel Johnson, who are pitching for the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Worcester Bravehearts, respectively.
In years past, the Ducks have sent several student-athletes to some of the top professional development leagues in the country including the Cape Cod League, Northwoods, Coastal Plain, Perfect Game, Texas Collegiate, South Florida Collegiate, New York Collegiate, and Futures Collegiate amongst others. See below for a full list of Stevens baseball's summer league placements.
"Summer baseball is such an important part of our program's culture," commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "In addition to our three most notable summer collegiate league placements, we are equally excited that several of our student-athletes and alumni will be competing together in leagues all around the country, such as the nearby New Jersey-based Metropolitan League and the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (ABCCL). The innings and at-bats that our student-athletes receive playing for these teams as well as the camaraderie that they develop during this summer environment has proven, over time, to be a key element to our team's success and overall chemistry."
Stevens completed the 2022 baseball campaign with a 29-16 record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. All totaled, three Ducks earned All-Region honors and seven were recognized the MAC Freedom for All-Conference honors. The Ducks also excelled off-the-field, posting a 3.696 team-GPA in the spring 2022 semester and currently maintain a 3.739 cumulative team-GPA.
Currently the Ducks have two active alumni competing in professional baseball. Right-handed pitcher Charlie Ruegger, selected by the New York Yankees in the 33rd round of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft continues to toe the rubber in the organization, earning a pair of victories for the Hudson Valley Renegades to bring his career win total to 12. Left-handed pitcher Chandler Brierley is entering his second year with the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League, where he has two victories and a pair of saves. The Frontier League is considered by many to be one of the top independent leagues in the country with a steady stream of players finding their way into affiliated baseball.
Ruegger, Robert Robbins and David Garcia mark the three former players who reached affiliated professional baseball after their careers on Castle Point came to an end. Robbins joined the Chicago Cubs organization in February 2019 as a free agent signee after two stints out at Driveline Academy in Kent, Washington. Garcia, meanwhile, enjoyed a nine-year professional career spread across four organizations, reaching as high as AAA in 1979. Are Bulls More Worried About Ball's Knee Than They've Let On? - On Tap Sports Net
When the Chicago Bulls signed Lonzo Ball in free agency in 2021, the excitement was palpable. Ball brought tons of potential to a team that already had All-Stars in Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic. The thought was adding Ball and another new acquisition in DeMar DeRozan to Chicago would make the Bulls relevant again.
That thought proved to be correct. Ball didn’t put up prolific scoring or assist numbers, but he quickly captured the hearts of Bulls fans and started showing signs of becoming a star.
Injury Bug
Then, things changed as injuries started to plague Lonzo, and he ended up tearing his meniscus.
Ball ended up getting surgery on his torn meniscus. The hope was he could come back by the playoffs, but that just didn’t work out. Ball was shut down for the season, and the Bulls limped through a first-round playoff exit after spending a large portion of the season as the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Lonzo played in just 35 games for Chicago last season before he was officially shut down. The results when Lonzo was on the court were promising. Ball averaged 13.0 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 5.1 APG, and 2.7 B/SPG. He shot 42.3% from the field and 42.3% from deep on 7.4 attempts per game. In the short sample size, Ball set career-highs in FG%, 3PFG%, TS%, SPG, BPG, and BPM among other areas. This was more than enough to keep Bulls fans hopeful for the 22-23 season with Ball back running the point.
2022 Offseason Concerns
As the Bulls and fans alike waited for promising news regarding Ball’s recovery, it just wasn’t coming. For a while, there would be no update. Then, there was news that his recovery was stagnant. In early June, The Athletic’s Darnell Mayberry gave us a concerning quote on Lonzo’s timeline.
It’s been four-and-a-half months since Ball was sidelined with a left knee injury that eventually turned into meniscus surgery. He’s still not right. Whether he will be in time for the season opener becomes more of a concern by the week. If Ball must undergo a second surgery, the time crunch intensifies. There’s been no indication from Ball’s camp that a second procedure is in the plan, but it can’t be ruled out if Ball’s knee remains unresponsive.
Darnell Mayberry/The Athletic
Still, the Bulls’ brass has been coy with their updates regarding their star point guard’s recovery process. Marc Eversley was asked about Ball’s progress after the draft, and he provided very vague answers. When asked if Ball would be ready for training camp in October, Eversley responded, “I certainly hope so.” That is not the type of answer the inspires a lot of confidence. Moreover, Arturas Karsinovas, though keeping it nonchalant, did say that Ball’s injury does affect the Bulls’ process as they build their roster.
The “a little bit” aspect of Karnisovas’s answer was initially met with some doubt. That doubt intensified when the Bulls made a surprise move by adding point guard Goran Dragic to the team on a one-year deal. As Bulls fans know, Chicago has a plethora of guards already who are fighting for minutes on the floor. The fact that Eversley and Karnisovas had one move left in free agency and a desperate need for interior defense, but they signed another guard to a roster that has Ball, LaVine, Alex Caruso, Ayo Dosunmu, and Coby White comes off as concerning regarding Lonzo’s status. It is hard to make sense of the signing without Ball’s health nagging your thought process.
The Bright Side
Of course, Eversley and Karnisovas have already developed a reputation in Chicago for keeping their plans under wraps. At this point in his career, Dragic is—at best—a rotational piece and makes sense as depth on the Bulls’ bench. This is especially true if a potential Coby White trade is still on the table. While Dragic does not shoot threes at the volume White does, he is a career 36.2% shooter (compared to White’s 36.5%) from deep on 3.4 attempts per game.
Furthermore, trainer Chris Johnson posted a video of Ball getting shots up in the paint Sunday on Twitter.
While it is nothing explosive, Ball seems to be moving okay in the video. However, it is just another small snippet of information to go off of. It still bears wondering: are the Bulls even more worried about Ball’s recovery than they’ve let on? The case can certainly be made that they are making preparations for starting the season without him ready to go. The question remains: when will Lonzo be healthy enough to take the court? It’s possible that it’s even later than we’re all hoping.
